PTV's are only available in First Class on the 764s. They should be in coach! Maybe someday.

Delta does not have personal video screens in Economy Class; however, every seat in Economy is equipped with handsets to operate the video screen.

Jmets18, by now you know that there is no IFE. I was disappointed to find this out too about a year ago when I flew my first 764 flight on DL. Here is a post I made like this one right before that flight:

So what's the use of having those remotes on the seats in coach if they don't have PTV's? I mean if the video screens are like every 5 rows, wouldnt it get annoying to flip thru the channels if someone is watching a movie?

The handsets do not control what's on the video screen. They simply control the audio channels, and the different language tracks of the overhead video programming. They work similarly to any entertainment control panel would in connection to a normal overhead video system.

I'd say these handsets are installed in the case that Delta wants to introduce PTVs in Economy on these aircraft one day. Perhaps one day (probably not in the short term) we'll be seeing the 767-400s plying longhaul routes, and Delta will try to enhance their coach product with PTVs, like on their 777s.

I hope you're asking because you want the flight map and not TV programming. If not, why would you want to waste time doing something on the flight that you can easily as well do at home?

When you're at home, you can do many other things than watch tv.

On a plane, your choices are extremely limited.

You can pretty much do anything you could do on a plane at home, except look out the window.

They use the same handsets for commonality purposes only. Rather then have two sets of handsets on the same plane (the PTV type in First, the regular arm chair style or w/e in coach) they decided to have a comonality throughout. Perhaps there is also a connection to possible instalation of the PTVs, but I remember reading/hearing that it was due to the comonality in some employee thing.

WISH is the operative word here. CO will always have DL beat no matter what they do. CO has managed to install PTVs across their entire long-haul fleet, and even UA managed to equip their inter-continental 767s with PTVs in coach. If UA can pull it off, DL certainly should have been able to, (although the current financial situation doesn't really build a case for doing so) but the reality of the situation is that DL will always be a second rate carrier as far as service and comfort are concerned.

And with regards to the above, yes I understand that CO had their fleet delivered with PTVs whereas DL would have to install new seats on their 763s. Nonetheless, I think there is no excuse for not having their 764s delivered without the PTVs installed. Shame on you, Delta.

What would Delta gain by spending millions installing PTV's on their 767-400. I imagine the good will of a few members of this forum, but most all regular passengers could care less. The airline(not Delta) with the highest load factor in the industryyear after year only has PTV on a few of its planes.

After reading most of the postings, I have a few questions. Don't any of you ever read a book? That's what most passengers do for entertainment on a flights I have been on. Do you watch TV or play video games every available minute while at home? Where does reading a good book fit into your lives?

No, DL does not.

And you're 'disappointed' that a flight (ATL-MCO) that's less than an hour in duration (from when they'd turn the TVs on until when they'd turn them off) didn't have PTVs?!?! Wow -- maybe I fly longhaul too much, but I find flights an hour in duration too short to even read...

Considering the fact that the 767-400 really is doing no intercontinental flying, there's no need for PTVs.

Of course, they do serve Hawaii, but no other airline in the Hawaii-US market is currently offering PTVs (besides Continental, of course – and United when they have to do last minute equipment changes).

"Continental 767-400 Coach, Wish Delta would step up"

Why would DL need to install these. CO and DL's aircraft are entirely two different machines. CO bought theirs to replace transatlantic aircraft and DL bought theirs to replace high density domestic routes. Had DL purchased these to replace an aging fleet of transoceanic aircraft then they would have the PTV's. But why waste the money to have them go ATL-CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO and ATL-FLL when the only option anyway would be airshow or Horizons video. Doesn't make much business sense to me. Seems like a big waste when they would be vastly under utilized.
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

If Delta were to order more 764s and use them exclusively for transoceanic routes, my guess is they would have PTVs. I think the only thing the current ones lack are the screens, and associated controllers in the seats, these would cost a pretty penny, but I believe all of the certification work and the like has been done. Of course we are likely to see this happen about the same time that DL redoes the interiors on the 763ERs to match that of the 772s.
