AA Retro Livery

Sat Mar 27, 2004 3:45 pm

As an AA employee, I found out I was quite in the dark about our retro 757 and 737. Turns out the 757 was converted back to the current AA livery last year and that the 737 is due to be converted in '05. When I asked why, I was told that the cost of one-off decals was way out of line with our "turnaround plan." I asked if we could come up with some kind of fund-raising to cover the costs (since the retro birds are excellent ambassadors for the company), but got the cold shoulder........

Breaks my heart to see them go.

I agree, the AA retro-jets were attention-getters. What would have really worked was to have had one of each aircraft type & variant in those colors. My favorite was the 738-type livery. They probably could have got a better deal from the manufacturer to produce quantity. Sad to see them go. I thought it was a wise marketing move. Heck, the sports teams got it all started with their throwback jerseys. It was a natural move for airlines to follow suit.

I remember when the 757 was first done....right around when the first 777 was delivered. My Dad worked at AFW at that time and took delivery of the retro 757 (5EL-N679AA). My dad flew to Seatle to pick the plane up and do the test flights an such then flew with the crew to AFW, the plane was deliverd with no paint on it. I believe they did the decales in Bay 5 at AFW. Dont really remember but i did fly on the plane from AFW-DFW for its first revenue flight.......what an AWSOME experiance feeling a 757 TO with no pax on board. I got a picture of the airplane not to long ago at ORD (when i was working their) with the regular livery. I have a picture on my wall in this room with my dad and his crew chief standing in front of the plane once it was all done......VERY gorgeous airplane. It will be missed very much. However the 737 is VERY gorgeous as well.

Heck, I liked them both! I'll sure miss seeing them. Did anyone ever see the retro 757 in ATL? I never did and I know they were still flying a couple 757's a day into ATL, before the repaint.  Smile

I saw AC's retro A320 painted the Trans-Canada scheme at LGA this week. It apparently has been in that scheme since 1997. If AC, which is in bankruptcy, can afford to keep one plane in a retro scheme, AA can afford to keep two planes in the retro scheme.

Did anyone ever see the retro 757 in ATL?

It had overnighted at ATL at least twice.

Sure us A.neters would LOVE the retro colors on there planes. However the company being so much into the "business travelers" probably wouldnt think its such an appealing airline but a "retro" airline that isnt looking into the future but is reflected upon the past. Not good for business. I personally like the scheme they have now, its my favorite. This is probably because i grew up all my life around AA and the planes.

So sad. So...so sad. I remember the time time I got to see them for my very own eyes. The 737 and 757 Retrojets were in SJU. Incidentally that was the same day when I saw the AA/TWA livery.

All 3 are good looking.

Pretty much every U.S. carrier except for UA (Star Alliance 767) and SWA is getting rid of their special schemes. Peter Max is in the twilight of it's life on N77014, a CO Boeing 777-224ER, and Delta removed the Soaring Spirit from its Boeing 777-232ER, N864DA, as well as the Spirit of Delta, N102DA, their second Boeing 767-232 and their overall second 767. Too bad for AA..too too bad.

American employees loved the Retrojet as well. In fact, there was a group of employees that was going to solicit donations from fellow employees to keep the 757 flying in Retrojet colors. However, management would have none of that and repainted it back in July. I was lucky to catch it twice at DFW in the days before it was repainted.

"American Airlines.........all retro, all the time"

I like the sound of that.........

Maybe bring back Mark Lindsay's song SILVERBIRD for a new ad campaign.
