Ever Paid Extra To Fly On A Certain Plane?

Sun Mar 28, 2004 5:08 am

I would love to try out SAA's new A346. The quickest and "cheapest" way will be to fly domestic sectors such as JNB-CPT-JNB.

As I don't live in either JNB or CPT, this will mean that I will have to fly in a triangular route and buy a more expensive ticket.

Have any of you done something like this before; fly a wacky route or pay extra for airtickets just in order to get on a new/different type of airplane?

No, I haven't paid ridiculously high prices to fly a certain aircraft but I have woken up at ridiculous times to fly a certain type (US 752) and i'm doing it again this summer PHL - FLL Big grin.

I, too, haven't paid extra, but have altered my sched. based on the equipment available. Most recent AC A333 YYZ-YVR instead of normal A320 or CRJs.

My boss's secretary always call the travel agency and ask for an AF 772 from CDG to JFK (no way he would board an AF 744).
If the seat he wants is not available, she tries the next flight. No matter how much it costs...

I paid a very high fare back in 1970 to fly from JFK to SFO First Class on a TWA 747; lower fares were available on other flights, but I very much wanted to fly on the just introduced 747 and it was worth every penny.

Occasionally, I'll pay a few extra bucks to fly on a certain equipment. Right now, I am researching flights to Los Angeles, and want to take a red-eye back to Boston. My options are to connect in CLE, IAH, or EWR on CO. Connecting in CLE is slightly cheaper (no more than $10), but I would be on 737s for LAX-CLE and CLE-BOS (nothing wrong with the 737, It just seems that I'm only flying 737s right now). However, the EWR option has a 757-300 on LAX-EWR, and I haven't flown on the pencil yet. Another choice has me paying a few extra bucks to fly on a DL 777 going from LAX-ATL, which I wouldn't mind doing, and also this itenerary can be worked out so I can get a ride on the elusive MD-90 (you never see any of those on the East Coast).

So in short, yes, I am willing to pay a little bit more for a certain type of plane, but no more than really $15-20.

I think I paid like 60 bucks more to fly on a United Triple 7...well worth it in my opinion.

LHR-JFK on a BA 744 or 772 would have been £177 at the cheapest last summer. I paid quite a bit more to fly on Concorde.

Rediculous. I would not pay any more $$$$ to fly a certain A/C type and I would not fly a long way out of my destination just to get miles, a certain a/c or even just for the hell of it. All I care about is getting from point A to point B in the least time and least expensive way.

I know my Dad, this past November, paid an extra $25 or so per person to go to Orlando/ Sanford non-stop from SYR, on a TransMeridian 727. He wanted to go on a 727 one last time, and other than my mom, none of the rest of us have been on one, so it was a bonus for me, anyway. My siblings don't care. My Dad loved that it was non-stop, too. I, personally, prefer to connect.

I do it all the time when I fly on Business. Heck, I am not paying for it.
I usually look for widebodies. Once I paid extra to fly a AA 777 from ORD to DFW , this was out of my pocket.

This probably doesn't count, but I pay about $15 more each hour to fly a 2001,2002, or 2003 C-172SP over a 1976 C-172M in my flight training.  Big thumbs up

The new planes are in much better shape, fly faster, have amazing avionics, and have leather seats. It's training in supreme luxury and style.

I do it almost every time.

I will ALWAYS spend more to fly on a well-scheduled widebody, and I will always pay more to not fly on a Classic 737.

I was flying on Delta, the first time I went to London I paid $7.00 more to fly on my first 777 rather than an 763.

I've flown just to fly on the last (and paid):

Delta L1011
Delta 727
and
AA 727 flights

I paid $240 one way to fly on my first 777 (delta) in Biz-Elite. I'll pay more for an itinerary if there is a widebody (lets say 763 over a 757 trans-con).

I've changed plans, overlooked other carriers, and paid slightly more to fly United 744/777 domestic flights. I only wish there were more opportunities to fly short-haul 744.

I paid 97 Euro for a triangle flight with EZY just to fly their 319s. This triangle flight was actually cheaper then a return flight and from an aviation fan point of view I never mind to fly three segments instead of two.
I've never had a flight with an Airbus and now I fly 2 segments (AMS-GVA-LTN).

Of course. Sometimes I paid more to get a certain airline/airplane/airport, there are too many examples to mention and I will not know how many money I spent to get certain airlines/airplanes and airport  Smile/happy/getting dizzy.

It's more often that I pay extra not to fly on a certain airplane, especially MD-80's. If it's not too much more expensive and there is a plane that I haven't flown on before, I'll choose the new plane.

When AA used to have MD-11s, I would sometimes double-connect to get on one.

I also flew on MGM Grand Air DC-8s 3 times between LAX and JFK. I only did that to experience the DC-8 before it was too late.

I intended to fly Corsair's 747SP between LAX and CDG, but I waited too long.

Hey Nanook,

Why don't you like the MD80 so much? I don't mean to be critical at all. I like the plane a lot and I never take the time to consider its bad parts, although I'm sure there are many.

About $50 extra r/t to fly on the 772 and 763, from SBN to SEA on UA, had to make one extra stop, and it took more time, but what do I care?

The routing ended up being SBN-ORD BAe-146 (AWAC), ORD-DEN 772, DEN-SEA 752 and return SEA-DEN 763, DEN-ORD 772, ORD-SBN CRJ (ACA)

Had a lot of "first's" on this trip, the 146, 772, 763, and CRJ. This was last June. Was very pleased I spent the extra money to get on these flights, I really liked to 763, but obviously just the shear power alone of the 772 made it MORE then worth the money.

Back in January 2004 I flew Auckland-Wellington-Christchurch to fly on ATR72 of Origin Pacific when I could have flown direct and saved $20.00

I'm only interested in commercial aviation now, not passionate, and these days look for nonstops, even if it means a RJ. But from the minute I could make my own decisions I worked with indulgent travel agents or airline res clerks to plot elaborate routings to see certain airports and catch certain aircraft that I knew would soon be extinct. This is how I managed to fly the DC3, DC6, Viscount, Electra, M404, CV240/340/440/600/580/880/990, FH227, YS11, Caravelle, BAC111, Comet, Trident, DC8s, 707s, 720s, among many others. I'm not sure how a young commercial aviation enthusiast could call doing so "rediculous." Awfully young to so rigidly dismiss passions (of any kind).

I always try to book myself on specific aircraft when flying domestically when possible. I arrange my monthly YYZ-YVR runs on AC 330s or 340s.

I paid 30.00 extra to fly on US Airways for the first time ( MCO-CLT-SJU), it will also be my first time on the A321 and A320. I could have gotten a cheaper ticket on ATA (757-300), SONG (757-200), or AA (A300, 757-200) nonstop, but I really wanted to fly those airus narrowbodies.

I will pay a little extra (up to $100) to fly on a widebody. I will pay a lot extra to avoid a turbo prop, or fly to an alternate airport instead.

I will pay just a little extra (30USD), to change my return flight leg from KUL, to be AMS (with B747), not FRA (B772).
Also, I've changed return from China to KUL, to HKG (B747), not CAN (A333).
They don't have PTV's in A333, but have on B747, hehe

In 1999, I was booked to fly on United from GEG-ORD, and the flight was overbooked. They asked for volunteers to get off the plane, and I went to the ticket counter poking around for more "interesting" flights than this B-737-300. They wound up sending me on the next flight from GEG-SFO, where I boarded a new 747-400 for the flight to ORD. For my "inconvenience" (lol!!!!) they even bumped me to business class.

I'm a happy customer!!!!  Big thumbs up

Back in 1999 I really wanted to fly 777 and I got a chance to do that on LHR-BOS. Thankfully I didn't have to pay extra - I simply chose the 777 departure for that day. For the return journey it was on 744 because the 777 timing was a bit inconvient to me.

Absolutely. I had not flown the MD-11, but I wanted too especially with most of them being sold to freight companies. So when booking my ticket last Christmas the return had two options:

1. PHX-ATL-LGA (1 stop, 767, no a/c change), or
2. PHX-ATL, ATL-JFK (767, MD-11)

When we were on the plane in PHX, they made the announcement about this flight going to ATL, and then on to LGA. My girlfriend asked why didn't we just stay on this flight. To cover, I said it was cheaper. It was only cheaper than DL's nonstop PHX-JFK. In my defense, it also gave me a chance to see the ATL airport.
Keep on truckin'...

Yes - booked DL from ATL-BOS not Airtran, to go on a L1011 (DL b@stards changed it to a v manky 727 at the last minute !)

I've selected quite a few routings over the years to fly particular aircraft or airlines - usually its a question of a longer stopover or staying an extra day, its no real hassle and usually not much more expensive. I'm REALLY hoping my next vacation to the US gets interupted for a meeting in Dallas - I'll be in DEN, so I get to fly F9 and an A318 (and the company pays, YAY !) - fingers crossed !
