AA #1972 Diversion Reason?

Sun Mar 28, 2004 5:48 am

I noticed that today (March 27) American #1972 from ATL to ORD was diverted back to ATL. Anyone know the reason why the F100 returned to ATL after takeoff?

AAL1972 air returned (not diverted) back to ATL due to MX at about 1500L. It departed from RWY 26L and landed on Runway 27R (the usual approach runway for emergencies). The trucks were out of the house on the south side of the field. The aircraft cleared the runway under its own power and stopped on TWY M6. It was met by AA mx personnel, ATL ops, and one fire truck. It was towed to the T-gates at about 1530. I had a fantastic view from the tower above C Concourse.

Thanks....interesting detail. My sister is sitting at the T gates right now waiting to board UA #423 back to Chicago....I'll have to ask her if she saw anything.

#3 tire (right main gear) blew on takeoff. Postflight inspection also found damage to #2 engine fan. Acft was taken out of service and the pax were accommodated on other flights.
