Sun Mar 28, 2004 2:40 am

Hi there

It`s the first time that I see four planes from Qantas together at LAX!

Can anybody tell me something about the routing of these planes??

I don't know the routing but I can tell you that it is not unusual to see 4-6 Qantas 747s and 4-6 Air New Zealand planes at LAX at the same time.

Thanks for plugging my photo  Big grin. When I was in LAX that day, I saw a Qantas take off before I left for PHX, and there was another one behind us taxing to the runway. So I guess it's not unusual.

QF has two daily nonstops from SYD and an additional one that operates 4 days per week. One of these inbounds from SYD continues on to JFK and back. In addition there are daily nonstops from MEL and AKL. This summer there will also be 3 times weekly nonstop service from BNE. With the exception of QF 8 to SYD, which is an afternoon departure from LAX, the rest of the flights depart in the late evening, which means they end up sitting at that remote location for much of the day.

Someone please correct me if I missed anything.

Ahhhh...QANTAS decided not to start service to ORD. At least for the time being. I guess you didn't get the memo (or memos, actually).

Four Qantas Planes At LAX

Quite common, actually. Ihave seen one land at 7am and another at 8am. They will sit there most of the day.

TPK is exactly right. Its not unusual for 3-4 QF 744's to be sitting at LAX for the day.

wow, good question to ask as ive always wondered what they were doing there. I LOVE landing at LAX and taxiing past those big boys- i figured they were there in case of equipment malfunction or something. But at night, do they turn the lights on inside before they start towing them over to the gates or how does that work exactly? I remember seeing them with lights on as I was taking off on VS 023 in December

To give some info on the reason for so many Qantas aircraft at LAX

Daily Flights from Australia / New Zealand to Los Angeles

QF 107 Sydney - LAX
QF 11 Sydney - LAX
QF 93 Melbourne - LAX
QF 25 Brisbane - Auckland - LAX

Additional Services from Australia / New Zealand to Los Angeles

QF 149 Sydney - LAX 4 days a week
QF 155 Auckland - LAX 5 days a week

and from late June early July 2004

QF 175 Brisbane - LAX 3 days a week

So as you can see from this timetable on some days there can be up to 6 aircraft in LAX at any one time, and when the new Brisbane service starts, that number could reach 7 aircraft a day.

Thanks

Crosscheck: Don't forget that one of the 744's continues on to JFK, and therefore doesn't spend the day at LAX.

But as for whether or not it's unusual to have 3-4 sitting at
LAX, it'd be unusual to *not* have 3-4 sitting there.

Please note that all flights with the exception of MEL, BNE, and AKL depart from Terminal 4. (There is a new large QANTAS/AADMIRALS CLUB at T4 now). The above 3 destinations flights will continue to depart from the TOM BRADLEY TERMINAL.

It's normal. When I was in LAX, I saw at least 3 QF jets, including Wunala Dreaming.

Pilottim747 ... QF operated into ORD for a very short time in 2002 or even maybe it was still '03. I don't think the service lasted more than 3-4 months. I think the idea was for the QF107/108 to transit LAX on some days to JFK, the other days to ORD.

Can anybody correct my info on this, and why they stopped after such a short time.

With regards to the flights arriving to and from LAX, and time spent on ground here is a rough table. Services based on / around August. Timetable changes season to season. So this will put the question at rest

FLIGHT / DAY OF OPERATION / TIME ON GROUND

QF107/108 SYD-LAX / MTWTFSS / 0710hours to 2345hours
on journey to NYC on days below it is not on ground all day at LAX
QF 107/108 LAX to NYC / --W-F-S / 0905hours to 2205hours
not spent at LAX

QF11/12 SYD-LAX / MTWTFSS / 0945hours to 2230hours

QF149/8 SYD-LAX / --WTF-S / 0600hours to 1300hours

QF155/156 SYD-LAX / M------- / 0730hours to 2320hours

QF93/94 MEL-LAX / MTWTFSS / 0730hours to 2340hours

QF25/26 BNE-AKL-LAX / MTWTFSS / 1045hours to 2140 hours

QF155/156 AKL-LAX / M----S- / 0730hours to 2320hours

QF 175/176 BNE-LAX / --W-F-S / 0730hours to 2320 hours

It appears some AKL - LAX services have been cut to account for the new BNE non stop service.

Monday is the busiest day and between the hours of 1045am and 9.40pm there should be 6 x 747 QF planes on the tarmac at LAX. At no other time of the week does this occur.

So to all you LAX spotters I hope the following info helps you out.

best regards

Airbear- sorry to correct you, but ORD never started. You may be thinking of Toronto which was a huge disaster- QF was completely crushed by Air Canada, although I can't remember the flight operated via LAX- think it was HNL with a 767.

QF operated 3 weekly 763 YYZ-LAX-HNL-SYD in 2001. The YYZ-LAX segment was turned over to OW partner AA who operates daily 738 service now. Soon twice daily.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Yyz717 - the Toronto service was SYD-HNL-YYZ, no LAX stop.
