Is Westjet Going To Lease B738 Again For Summer?

Mon Mar 29, 2004 7:04 am

Two summers ago from the YEG-YYZ and YYC-YYZ route, Westjet leased two B738s from DL for the summer months...is this going to happen again, especially now that it is rumoured that they are looking at purchasing their own 738s?

No, that was a one time thing. I have a feeling that we'll be announcing orders for -600 and -800 aircraft sometime in the next 6-8 months.

The DL 738s were a stop-gap measure until WS took delivery of more -700s from Boeing.

And also, there were apparently some operational issues with the 738s, as some of the equipment onboard was inoperable during the term of the lease, and hindered more than helped WestJet's operation (read: the "Magic carpet" pit floors)..... so I'd think that WS would think twice before going this route again.

And besides, now they have plenty of -700s to go around.

Those moving carpets or whatever they're called were a bitch to load, try rolling a bag on rubber - you can't! The -800 was a nice bird to fly on though, especially with the 35" or whatever seat-pitch (150 seats, you do the math!).

As an aside, if we are to get -800's they'll be configured with 160 or 163 seats.

Were the magic carpets deactivated? I know we took out the HUD, but I didn't know about the cargo pits.

Oh yes the magic carpets were deactivated, it wasn't written into the contract that Westjet was able to use them.

I really wish they hadn't deactivated those carpets, I really could have used them when I worked on the ramp! A neat idea though, I didn't know that any aircraft had such a thing until I worked on those two birds.

Hey shane, just ask Kris....he loved them Big grin

Apparently it is a motorized rubber belt in the belly of the aircraft that could transfer the bags to the rear of the aircraft.

To elaborate a bit..

The black "carpet" is esentially a movable rubber mat in the forward and aft pits. The reason, as explained to me, was to minimize the amount of people needed in the pit of the aircraft. I don't know if you've worked on an -800 before, but its pretty damn long in the aft pit. Instead of having one person at the door and another deep into the pit stacking bags, the carpet allows one person to be positioned at the pit door and stack bags right onto the mat. When the bags can't be stacked up, a button is pushed (on the ceiling) which moves the carpet (and the bags) to the rear of the pit. This process eliminates the need for a second person.

A very cool idea, its a damn shame I never had a chance to use it!

I saw that them using the one person in the cargo the other summer, it was pretty cool, what was the problem with it?

When Delta leased the two -800's to us, they deactivated them so in the event that they broke, Westjet wouldnt have to eat the cost of fixing it. They did the same thing with the HUD, microwaves, and a few other gadgets in the cabin.

Thats awsome, so you could stack at the door, and move it back. Too bad other aircraft dont have em!!! its simmiler to loading cans on a dc-10, a330, 747.
Awsome idea

The magic carpets were, according to the guys I talked to, apparently a maintenance hog, and WS had no-one qualified to fix them. Getting someone from DL to hang out in the event they fixed would probably have been prohibitively expensive.

I used one several times before, and they can also be hard on bags if used carelessly. They can suck up one of those folding suit-bags, never to be seen again. That's nasty to see, and even more of a headache to tear some poor sucker's bag out of the system..... now, telescoping pits - different concept, same end goal..... like those in the old QN 757 - were awesome.
