Man Jumps Out Of Plane In San Diego

Tue Mar 30, 2004 3:46 pm

My friend just called me, I guess today there was a pilot giving a ride to somebody who was dying, as a part of a last chance program of some sort. He said the dying man jumped out of the aircraft while it was coming in to land, and died. I guess the pilot nearly lost control trying to keep the man inside the aircraft.

Anybody have more info on this?

edit: heres a link to the story:

EL CAJON – A possibly suicidal or disoriented 88-year-old passenger in a biplane leaped to his death today as a companion was piloting the craft toward an East County airport, authorities said.

The man climbed out of the dual-wing plane as it flew over a mobile-home park near Gillespie Field airport in El Cajon about 4:45 p.m., according to investigators.

The pilot tried to pull him back inside, but "tragically couldn't do that and fly the airplane at the same time," sheriff's Capt. Glenn Revell told KNSD.

"And the man left the aircraft, plummeted through the air, struck two power lines on the way down, glanced off a building and was killed on impact," he said.

The man's plunge through the utility lines caused some power outages in the neighborhood, a dispatcher said.

The man's name was not immediately released

How bizarre. Bet for some people on this forum, it would be the way to go if they knew they were terminally ill...

Still, very looney and sad.  Nuts

Oh great - just imagine what this must have done to the pilot - I bet he's devastated... seeing someone jump to his death is not a fun experience...

The news in San Diego reports that according to the pilot the man fell out of the plane and the flight was a birthday present for him.

This actually happened less than 2000 feet from where I live. They had the whole street closed off this evening when it happened and the power was out due to the guy falling on power lines. I heard when he hit the lines it actually severed his body. Very tragic event  Sad

It's hard to "fall" out of a Stearman, unless it's inverted. Which I think was not the case here. The news story says the man climbed out of the aircraft, in spite of the pilot's attempts to pull him back in, and fell to his death. Plane was on approach to Gillespie Field and was about 300-400 feet up. Appears to be a suicide by a man facing a case of debilitating cancer.

Guess I am callous, but if I was 88, disoriented and dying of cancer I would have done the same thing. One last rush! RIP.
