"Northeast" Yellow L-1011 At DAL This Weekend

Tue Mar 30, 2004 5:10 pm

Dear Gang,

Did a search on this and found no thread, so...

I was in Dallas this weekend and made a pilgrimage to WN's birthplace, Love Field, while I was there. I was surprised to see an L-1011 painted in the yellowbird colors of long-defunct Northeast Airlines. It was parked at one of the hangars along Lemmon Road, towards Mockingbird. I saw it there on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, apparently unmoved (I was staying with friends on either side of the airport had drove by it several times).

One of the airline mags had a report this winter that an outfit in South America painted an L-1011 in the NE yellowbird colors, I figure that's probably it. Anyone have more info? And why is it at DAL?

There was also the tail of a 747--probably an SP by the size of the hangar--sticking out of a hangar just west of the NE L-1011. The tail was white with green, looked like Arabic, lettering. Anyone know about that a/c?

Rumor is that there is some movie being filmed and they're going for Northeast airlines and using the L-1011. My friend too thought it was from S. Africa, i think he had read something about it....

It was parked at FLL a few weeks back when my friend and I saw it.

You are correct. The L-1011 you saw was 3D-NEG of Northeast Airlines (Swaziland) PTY. It was ferried from Dakar to Ft. Lauderdale via Barbados. After a day in FLL it went to DAL to appear in the NBC pilot "The Hub".

Here's another thread on the subject:

Serb Airlines is the fictitious carrier to which you're referring.

Lindy Field...actually, the plane had Northeast Airlines titles and the "NE" on the tail. I looked at the other thread...if this is the same a/c that had the fictional Serb airline markings, it's not painted with those markings any more. And the yellow paint extends along the fuselage bottom as it did on actual NE planes.

I do remember reading that there is an actual "Northeast Airlines" in Bolivia or one of the Andean South American countries that specifically, intentionally, is replicating the NE livery on an L-1011. In the picture, the plane has the country name underneath the windows behind the forward door. This a/c did not have a country name, at least on the right side which was visible.

Any info on the 747?

Perhaps the Serb Air markings were just temporary but this does seem to be one and the same aircraft we're talking about. This aircraft was first painted up as Northeast Airlines and then Northeast Bolivian Airlines as the photos below show.

Sorry I can't help with any specific information about the future of this aircraft, but I'm fairly certain it's one of a kind.

What strikes me is how nice a Tristar looks with a fresh coat of paint on it. It is nice to see an older airliner like that after some exterior refinishing.

It is the same L-1011. The plane was originally assigned to Northeast Bolivian Airlines as a partnership with the owners of the L-1011, the Flightstar Group. The NEBA deal never materialized and the plane was transferred to the AOC of Northeast Airlines Swaziland Pty as 3D-NEG. They have one other L-1011 operating as 3D-NEC but in the old Tradewinds paint scheme.

The plane was stripped of the NE colors and had Serb Air markings added. After filming, the plane will not have, from what I am told, the NE markings added.

The plane I saw on March 25, 26, and 27, 2004 at DAL had *Northeast Airlines* painted on its right side and "NE" on the right side of the tail. I never saw the left side of the plane.

Then perhaps you saw it before filming or there was an anomaly with the dates of the filming of "The Hub." NE only has one L-1011 in that scheme and it's the one you saw at DAL for filming of "The Hub."
