British Midland To USA

Can someone share the details of BM's proposed USA routes? I.E. When will they start, what aircraft, and what proposed cities? Thanks.

Hi Hark,
No startup confirmed but probably next Summer (2001)
Aircraft A330-200 probably No announcement there either
Routes?
Check their website news items over 1998/1999. It lists their route applications from LHR and MAN.

British Midland will fly to US hopefuly

February1999

British Midland announced its intention to return to the US market after a 15-year absence by applying for route licences to operate scheduled services to 10 US destinations from Heathrow - New York, Boston, Washington DC, Miami, Atlanta, Denver, Chicago, Houston, Seattle and Los Angeles.

Lindy, that quote states that the airline is going to serve the US again "after a 15 year absence." I did not know that they had EVER served the US. does anyone have info on previous BM service?

BM Previous Transatlantic Routes

British Midland did indeed used to fly both scheduled and charter services across the North Atlantic - using a fleet of 707s, altho services were primarily based at Manchester I believe.

I took that short statment from British Midland archives on their web page. I cant wait to see them at IAD.
Anyway, they will fly to IAD or BWI????
IAD is full of flights to England, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, United, so does it means that BM will go to BWI???

The A330 should be able to make it LHR-SEA no problem. Aer Lingus flies the A332 from DUB-LAX. I know that IAD is full of flights to LHR. This summer UA will fly 3 times, BA 3 times, and VS once. So, I think British Midland should start service to Manchester, nonstop. Lots of customers connect on BM when they get to LHR, to go to MAN, when traveling on United with a mini-alliance setup.

I think that another BOS-LHR flight, while welcome, would be late into an already tapped market. The Boston-London market supports currently 7 winter, and 8 summer flights to LHR and LGW with AA, BA, UA, and VS all flying the routes with A300's, B767's, B777, and 747's. This makes Boston-London the third largest US-Europe route, after JFK, and probably Chicago to London. With an 8th and 9th daily flight, I don't know how BM could possibly have success. I think a MAN-BOS, which there is currently no service between, would be great, as they would have a route monopoly, and it would open up Northern UK to Boston, as there is a huge British population in the Boston metro area.

Don't forget LH423...
Olympic Airways will be starting A340 service ATH-MAN-BOS next summer.
Delta Air Lines will be starting BOS-LHR/LGW (depending on US/UK agreement).
Here is the current schedule:
AA: 2 A310's, eventually a 763 during peak, currently 1 to LHR and 1 to LGW.
BA: 2 777's and 742 to LHR
VS: 742 to LGW, codeshared with CO
UA: 763 to LHR

If you add Delta (1/2 763/4) and BM (A330) to the mix, you have 10 LHR flights.

Personally, I think BM going to MCO would be better, because they should just codeshare with UA on the BOS route. I also think DFW would be better than IAH.

DeltAirlines you mean AA A300. But I tought they fly them only to Carabian not to Europe. Thats just my tought.

American's A300-600s are steadily increasing in transatlantic flights. Right now, there are many flights from JFK-LHR operated by the A300, as well, EWR-LHR is operated by an A300. It use to be a 767-200. So they're not just used for Central American destinations.

AA MAN-BOS Route

I read in a magazine somwhere that AA may start daily MAN-BOS this summer using 767-200s to replace their summer only MAN-DFW fligts that have been withdrawn.

Also, the BM destination list is just the destinations they have applied for. There first order is likely to be 2-4 A330s so they won't be serving any more than 4 cities to start with.
