Ever Had A Window Seat Without A Window?

Tue Mar 30, 2004 8:04 pm

That is really a nightmare. I have seen it on some large Airbus and on a DC-8 a long time ago. A row that ens on both side with a WALL!
But have you had this experience yourself onboard?

Grrrrrr ! I was so pissed taking a confirmed seat back FRA-PHL long ago in the 762 - 8 hours with no window and someone elses 4 year old next to me. They promised me a window seat, yeah a seat with the letter "A" but jsut a nice big fat WALL. Not a happy flight.

Haven't bought a ticket on US Air since.

Oh, man, my friend had the same problem once, requested window-seat, and his clever travel agent gave him - the white wall...

Is there any particular reason why those windows are blocked?

Sure. On Continental, I've been in seat 6F on a BWI-CLE 735 and seat 32F on a DCA-IAH MD-80. Not thrilled, but it beat walking  Smile

Never had it but in my time on Check-in if somebody had hacked me off or had been a real ar*e I would sit them in either seat 7A or 7F of a
Bae146-300, neither of which had a window. A little nasty but these things happen.

It happened to me on and IB flight from AB / Sinchonri (K-16) (SSN / RKSM), South Korea">SSN to MD), Spain">MAD. Again, one of the first to check in for and MD-80, got the window seat and there was a window there, but just a nice view of an engine and not a lot else!

The reason why they are blocked has been discussed at length here:

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/tech_ops/read.main/21591/4/

After heated discussion, the consensus seemed to be that there was air conditioning ducting and wiring in those areas.

Still annoying, though. I had a wall on an Austrian A340-200 flight from NRT to VIE. Thankfully, I was able to get moved to a better seat!

(The seat was 10A, in case anyone wants to avoid it in future!)

Happened to me on a Britannia Airways 752 in 1998 - GOT-LPA-GOT. It was row 15 I think. It sucked..

Last autumn I sat in the last row on a SAS MD82 (CPH-MAD), that is more or less a wall too, the only thing you see is an engine. That sucked too.

BA Boeing 757s have one, but I cant remember the row, I think it might be 12. I suffered from Larnaca to Heathrow once - but I swapped it for a backward facing crew seat right at the front - far more exciting! Also, their Boeing 767s have them too.

This was the culprit...

24Oct 2002 flew NRTSYD on QF747 VHEBS,had a K seat cant remember the row number was but was first row behind the middle door no window and worst of all almost no legroom, if youve flown on a 747 you will have notice a large bump at the bottom of the door were the emergency slide is stored, well this was about 9ins from the front of the seat at my right foot and about 18ins at my left, happily the middle seat was empty so i slide along,if the flight had been full it would have been a nightmare...oh the pleasures of staff travel

I flew on December 25th 1995 with TWA Flt 741 from Frankfurt to New York/JFK on N602TW and I was seated in Seat 12-1 (later 12-A) and this had no Window. The crew told me this was the former Business Class Section that`s the reason it had no window! It was suck but the fine TWA Service and nice crew made my journey afterall very good! I miss TWA, but never choose seat 12A on their 762`s!!!

On a Britannia 767-300 Orlando - Gatwick. I dont think it was wiring to blame, probably more to do with them cramming 328 seats on the plane.
next flights : BD LHR-TXL J, FR SXF-STN Y, SN BRU-LHR Y, MA LHR-BUD Y, BA BUD-LHR J, BA LCY-SNN-JFK J, BA JFK-LHR J, BA

Seat 2A on a Mesaba/Northwest Airlink Saab 340 from GFK to MSP. It was fine though because I was dead tired and is the only time I have slept for most of a flight. It was great actually!

Non-reving You get what is left over, so sitting next to a wall is not all uncommon. I sat in th emack of MD-80s and DC-9s several times. Going MXP-EWR, I was going with my dad and if we wanted to sit together we could have 5A and 5B. All the b/f seats have ~2.5 windows, but the only one for row 5 is at the front of your seating area. But It did beat coach for a 9.5 hr flight.

Had one of those "wonderful" seats on a UA B777-200 from LHR to IAD, I'm not sure what row it was, but it was in the Economy Plus area (during the time when UA still had 777s with EcoPlus that were configured at normal Economy pitch... yuck!!!): we had a delay of about 2 hours getting out of Heathrow, and the only way I could look outside was by looking back over my shoulder, because the next window was next to my seatback...  Sad

I had such a stiff neck when I left the plane...

Happy contrails,

Row 6 on UAL 737-300s has a window missing, plus it was the only row on our airplane where the in-seat audio didn't work (but nevermind that). No view, and no entertainment, not the most fun for a 2 hour flight from ORD to PVD. I know that the Saab 340 has windows missing that are in line with the propellors. Instead they have steel plates just incase something should happen to the prop. I wonder if this is the same reason for row 6 missing a window, as far as I remember it was inline with the fan blades of the engines.

I think that after rather rabid discussion in tech_ops, the consensus was that on large jets, the window is not missing because it is "in line" with the engines.

I quite often use Lacsa's flight 626 from SJO-MIA. My prefer seat is 11A or 11F of an A320. It's a window seat (Emergency exit) plenty of room. The only problem is that the two windows are located in a very uncomfortable position. If you want to take a pick outside, you must move yourself forward, otherwise... There is a wall...

YES,

YYC - YYZ with JetsGo. I asked for a window seat and guess what I have? well yeah a window seat, but 5 inches from my window was the nice 'quiet' engine... S.O.B. Oh well I flew there for dirt cheap. I won't complain.  Smile

It even happens in Business Class. I once sat in row seven on a United 767-300. It really sucked, since the only window there was so far ahead that I had to unbuckle my seat belt to look out of it. Also, it happened to me on an Air Berlin flight some years back, but I am unsure about the exact seat. Must have been somewhere rows 6-9.

Today I use services like http://www.seatmaps.net to make sure that doesn't happen any more.

Some of the rows on the 737-800 have no windows. Supposedly, if the engine were to spit out chunks of fan blades, they would fly into the fuselage where the missing windows are located.

On the last row of AA's MD-80s, there is a window, but it's a view of the engine cowling.

The last row of the Fokker has no window, because the that's were the strut the holds the engine is located.

Not necessarily. The engine cowling should be enough protection. And aircraft aluminum is not really that thick. The windows are pretty strong even in comparison.

26A in business class on UA's 747 has a window missing - you have to twist your head back or lean right forward.

And I too have had the pleasure of 7A on Air Moldova's Yak-40. No view,no legroom and no width. Cool plane though!

On most planes with wing-mounted engines you will find this in the turbine disintegration zone. Does that suggest anything? In at least one plane I knew, there was supposed to be a Kevlar strap there. Call it the non-rev seat.

Row 1 of the Beech 1900 doesn't have a window. That was not enjoyable, but I suspect it is becuase the propellar was right next to where the window should have been.

argh! - Happened to me more than once on European flights, mostly on 737-models.
Think it was the return for having asked in a particularly nice way for a window seat. Needless to say I could have killed the check-in staff when taking the seat.

PS to my post #46

I once had an opportunity to examine a DC-8-73 that had experienced an uncontained disk rupture in the vicinity of Walker Lake Nevada. They made an emergency landing in RNO.

You could have stepped in the left side of that engine and out the right side. Several of the stages of compression were completely missing. The only thing that kept the first stage fan on the aircraft was its containment by, I guess the no.1 bearing package because the forward part of the fan shroud and the inlet ring of the cowl was held in place by the anti-ice ducting and a couple of things like that.

The schrapnel from that engine, mounted at the number 1 position, pelted the fuselage and put deep dents in the skin. Some parts were expelled forward and ingested by the number 2 engine. (did I mention that it was an emergency landing?) None appeared to have hit a window. All I could think, looking at this mess was:

  1. Good thing it wasn't a tail-mounted engine.

  2. Good thing it wasn't inboard mounted, as at No.2 or 3.

  3. I don't think I want to sit in the turbine disintegration zone anymore.
