The New United Commercials

Wed Mar 31, 2004 11:17 am

Just wanted to see what the general opinion was out there about the new United Commercials being displayed in the U.S.

I have seen them on the History Channel and CNN throughout the past few weeks, ending with the tag line, "It time to fly"

Personally, I feel they are classy, and a tribute to the carrier's attempt to emerge to fiscal stability and its position of years' past.

Agreed, the ads are gorgeous, and 'Rhapsody in Blue' makes it really classy. I only wonder if the viewers will remember the advertised product. I like 'em though.

They're great... all by Academy Award winning animators, too.

Certainly has a bent appeal to the high-yield passenger they are trying desperately to attract as well.

They are very catchy. I'm always happy to see one on TV. Rhapsody in blue is great!

They're nice and I do like the "Rhapsody in Blue" again, but the "Lightbulb" one is not very effective in my opinion. The original one is much better.

The Lightbulb Confused

The Rhapsody in Blue Confused

I'm confused. Is one of these the commercial where the man has two different colored shoes on? And I saw a second one, forgot what it was. Tune to the History Channel, and you are bound to catch at least one per five commercial breaks or so...maybe even less than that. United is definently resurfacing Big grin

Why Would United Hire someone that puts on two different shoes..???

Like he won't notice and Buy some new matching shoes before the interview..!

Stupid waste of money they could of used it to show the new paint Job or Pictures of Tokyo, Rio, or Hong Kong..or promote TED...I hope they didn't pay much for it United has lots to talk about they need to dump that crappy cartoon..

Sorry, but I thought American used Rhapsody in Blue? I know it is on their hold music when calling for reservations. The best Golden Oldie was Pan Am's "Wouldn't you like to fly in my beautiful balloon." Done by the 5th Dimension. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks Dan.

They remind me of the little cartoon bear family that star in the charmin toilet paper commercial. I do like however the tag line "It's time to fly" and the return of the classic Rhapsody in Blue. I knew instantly it was a UA commercial when I heard the music. However, I just couldn't get my mind off toilet paper. It's a very abstract way of selling an airline. I think they could have done better. I'm not in advertising, but I am a consumer and it doesn't sell United to me. It sells toilet paper.

I think the new commercials are cute, but I don't get the point. I too had the thought of the toliet paper ads. It's good to hear some Gershwin again, though. United's been so absent from commercials that watching this, I was thinking, "Hey, United... I remember those guys. They were big, like back in the '90's. Fly the friendly skies and stuff. Wow. For some reason I feel like buying toliet paper now..."

I love the commercial and loved United service but sad to say don't think I would fly them..they are TOOO EXPENSIVE.

Everythime Ive looked on online websites for flights, whether its domestic to Orlando or international to Heathrow, United is the last one listed and with the craziest number..recently VS was $398 and UA showed up as $3000 on orbitz...whats up with that?

Best Regards

I personally really like the new commericials. Especially the "interview" one. The animation is beautiful and the use of "Rhapsody in Blue" was smart, as most people still associate that song with United airlines.

While it maybe abstract, it gets the point across. It is a message that I connect with b/c I just went through the interview process and got the job. And flew United for the trip.

"It's time to fly" is also a very good slogan.

Gershwin was probably spinning in his grave but a few years ago I remember a not too sophisticated colleague of mine hearing Rhapsody in Blue on the radio and commenting "hey they are playing the 'United Song'"--it was a good association to use that song and I agree it's nice to see it back--brings a little positivity and elegance to them-

If memory serves it used to play in the connecting corridor in the United terminals at ORD.

The 2 mismatched shoes is just a little campy--but hey I'm prepared to cut them a little slack as they try to reclaim a little dignity--

I was in O'Hare recently and they certainly have some sort of alt version of "Rhapsody in Blue" playing in that connecting corridor between the B and C concourses of the United termainl.
