New International Low-Cost Airline In SA

Wed Mar 31, 2004 1:21 pm

A new international low cost airline is born (or will be born): CIVair.com.

The South African based company will fly from Cape Town to London starting from R2000 (just under US$400) to a max of R4000 (just under US$700).

Amazing!!!

Question is : Are people willing to fly a low-cost airline for 11-13 hours? It's kind of - non cosy?

Are there any other international low-cost airlines that operate for so long?

According to the press-release, this 'low cost' fare is one-way and no taxes included. Now that starts at about R4500 return. It isn't very low cost, as there are other carriers offering return airfares the same or maybe even cheaper, with the frills....

Well, the "lowest" price isn't really all that thrilling, but the "maximum" price of R4000 could be something interesting: prices to SA can sometimes go to ridiculous amounts, and seeing how booked the carriers on Europe-SA routes are, I'd say that the market can use another entrant.

But Civair? Admittedly, at least it's not a completely new airline, because they've been flying for quite some time (even if not on "low cost international services"), but are they really sure that they want to take on SA, BA, LH, AF, VS and others?

Happy contrails,
Frank

I returned from CPT to LHR on Monday on BA. A bit of healthy competition would be good on this route, especially at peak times.
