Free Flights On Virgin Express / Loss For 2003

Wed Mar 31, 2004 5:00 pm

Hi all,

An internal audit by Virgin Express revealed that the Belgian low-cost affiliate of the Virgin group never billed the credit cards of some of its customers between 1999 and 2001 ! The error is due to interface problems between the airline's computer reservation system and credit card companies' systems. The amount that went never billed totals EUR 7.4 millions, "less than 1 % of the revenue", according to Virgin Express...

Virign Express released yesterday its 2003 results, posting a EUR 19.6 millions loss, with revenues down 9 %. For 2002, a small profit of EUR 400 000 was achieved. According to the airline, the last quarter of 2003 was particularily difficult, as the airline suffered from strong competition (mainly from SN Brussels Airlines, but also from low-cost airline Ryanair).

Talks are undergoing with SNBA for a possible merger.

Regards,
BrusselsSouth

I believe that also other (airline) companies may not be immune to this particular (IT?) problem.

Personally I had an experience with DAT (pre SN Brussels Airlines). On their website I had made an internet booking (worth 254 EUR) on 23/11/2001, to be paid with my credit card. I used my tickets, had a nice flight, however nothing happened with my account. So as time passed by I started to believe that DAT might have completely forgotten about my little debt. Finally my account was credited on 28/05/2002, about six months after date of booking and flying.
