Philly Airport

I was just wondering, looking through the photos taken at American airports, why there seems to be a lack of coverage of Philadelphia Airport. Is it not a good area for spotting/photography? I visit the 'live cam' there quite often and it certainly seems to be a busy place. Hope someone can provide the answer.

What do you mean a lack of coverage? My dad and I comprise over 300 photos from PHL. Our fellow spotter Paul Kanagie just got a Digital Rebel and has been uploading in droves over the past couple of weeks (of course he also somehow manages to get down there like every day). Some other spotters I know have equipment that can't produce photos on a.net standards.

Maybe others just don't like seeing millions of US Airways jets one right after the other, because we certainly have plenty of them. Oh, and yes, the live cam is pretty cool.

There are 928 photos from PHL. Granted, those aren't the numbers of LAX, JFK, LHR or MIA, but I'd call it decent coverage.

Joe, that LH A330-200 taken on Feb 29 looks sweet!  Smokin cool. Any more problems with the cops since the big fiasco last year?

Does PHL have an annual airline collectables show? They had one in 1994, and we got a tour of the field and the fire station, it was cool.  Big thumbs up

I haven't heard of any collectibles shows around here. Would be nice though. I've seen the fire station many times though. We've got friends in there. The captain even took me and my dad for a little ramp tour one day. I got to stand next to a lonely US 757 parked at the deicing ramp. Smokin cool

The cops have actually been very quite recently. I've had them drive past while I had my camera up to my face tracking an arriving plane and they didn't seem to care. However, Paul Kanagie was told to leave the other day by one cop, while two had driven right on by earlier. He didn't recognize this cop, so maybe he's a substitute for someone else.

I think my dad nailed the LH A332. Joseph J. Wagner is my father, while I am Joseph K. Wagner. It gets a little confusing sometimes.

Speaking of Philly airport, can someone suggest/offer the best way to get in to the city from PHL? Don't know if there is a rail system like in Chicago and New York. Will be flying in for the 4th of July weekend for my first visit to this great city! Suggestions on what to do in over the 4th weekend is also appreciated! Thanks!

Our Mass Transit system, SEPTA (and also my employer) operates a Rail line from Airport Terminals A through E to Center City. Trains leave every 30 minutes from 5:09 AM to 12:09 AM. Cost is around $5. Travel time is 31 minutes to Market East Station in center city. For more info, check out http://www.septa.org/schedule.cgi?route=r1&day=1.

Alright, now that I'm done plugging my employer, there will probably be a crap load of things going on around the 4th. I think there's usually a fireworks display or something down at Penns Landing. I never really bothered with any of that so I'm not completely sure. I'll be spending this 4th in Switzerland anyway, so I could care less what's going on. Smile

Philly Spotters:

Have you guys ever had luck at Red Bank Battlefield Park in National Park, NJ? I didn't have an adequate camera but I got some sweet shots of a plane flying right over me last week...my wife and I even saw a US bird make a missed landing.

We're proud to report that this year's annual March spotters gathering went off without a hitch, not one police car spotted at all, however we did observe a mugging in progress near Fort Mifflin, the victim being PHLapproach, so our condolences go out to him.

As for the photography thing...quite frankly there is almost nothing special about PHL...tons and tons of US, but nothing ultra unique from the other airlines, and as previously noted, the cops have been a problem in the past...

lol, Greg, well im looking into a Konica Minolta Dimage Z2, If I do purchase it I WILL BE at PHL like everyday and you will see a jump in updated pics. Joe or any of the other PHL guys, what do u think of the Dimage Z2. Any other suggestions on what to look for. Well school is now ending, bye  Smile

I was going to be around for the first day of WN service, but it turns out I have to graduate from college the same day (damn good for nothing college  Big grin). I guess I'll have to settle for Day two of WN service.

Otherwise, I'm up for another spotters meeting at any time. Spotting alone in complete silence for more than one hour is really boring (I know, saying spotting is boring is blasphemy). I'm also looking forward to the first day of F9 service in the end of May sometime. I think the US E170s start flying this Sunday too.

I'll be up at PHL im gonna say April 19th and also like again later on that week and if I can get some advice on the Dimage Z2 then I should have it by then and make my A.net debut Big grin, and if I have it for sure I wanna get picks of the first WN flight in even if I have to wake up at 5:00am same for F9 service.

I was in PHL last week on a business trip and had a great time - a very enjoyable city and certainly look forward to coming back!

One observation though was the length of the queue to get through security at PHL airport. I travel frequently to the USA and the queue at PHL was by far the longest I have experienced (since 9/11 I have also been through EWR, JFK, BOS, MSY, IAH, SFB, SFO, LAS, TPA, CLT). Might have just been unlucky on my visit as only one Xray machine out of 4 was being used.

I am in no way moaning about security as I realise how necessary it is these days, but am just curious if frequent travellers have found PHL to be longer than other US airports?

I my experience, PHL is no worse than any other airport. The TSA agents seem to be a little more 'rough' with the pax than at other airports, but this is Philly we're talking about. The longest I've experienced was PHX at spring break time last year. The lines between Terminal 4 A and B checkpoints actually were backed up past each other.

Good job PHL photogs on the shots of a/c--I too have noticed that the database has lots of them.

If any of you could get an aerial shot of the terminal complex while taking off or landing, that would be a good addition to the database. The database has a number of aerials of the whole airfield. But unlike the NYC airports there aren't any detailed low-altitude overviews of just the terminal buildings.

I'd especially enjoy a low-altitude shot of the new Int'l terminal surrounded by US A330's at rush hour. Not, of course, that any of y'all have anything else to do,  Smile but PHL's terminal buildings are underrepresented.

there is one overview of the PHL terminals in the database, but it does pre-date the new terminal.

You can see the new Terminal full of 330s via the webcam, but it's not ideal...

During the 4th of July weekend, Philly hosts what is known as a 'Welcome America' festival. Throughout the week, the festival features tons of festivities, fireworks, and so forth (most of which are FREE).

Incidentally, SEPTA's one-way fare on the R1 line to any of the Center City stations (University City, 30th St., Suburban Station, Market East) is $5.50. SEPTA does offer a DayPass which will cover any bus or subway travel throughout the city and one-way along the regional rail system. The R1 line is part of the Regional Rail System. For more info., SEPTA's website is www.septa.com.

That would be virtually impossible, regrettably, owing to the runways usage...most takeoffs are on 27L and the rotation point on 27L is well past the terminals followed by the immediate noise abatement turn to the left away from the terminals as well, and on landings at 27R aircraft are usually touching down just before the start of the terminals...conversely, when the 9's are in use, a 9L takeoff means the aircraft are rotating somewheres close to the terminal and aircraft approaching 9R are nowheres near the terminal on arrival...so such a shot would be difficult to get...if your arriving to PHL from the west and the 27's are in use, the usual approach path takes you about 10 miles north of the airport or so, just north of Center City, and at that point you can see the airport pretty good but its still kinda far...I do have a shot on another site demonstrating such a view...

I suppose you could spot there if you really like seeing USAIR and USAIR and USAIR and........etc  Smile

Not sure about the spotting places I know there is one member that often posts when he is going to be spotting to see if anyone wants to join him sorry cannot rememmber his name but i think he knows a good spot

Regarding SEPTA: When I lived in South Jersey, I tried to use SEPTA for PHL connections, and unless you are living in Suburban Station in Center City Philly, SEPTA was simply AWFUL for commuting with. It simply didn't work...

... and compared to MTA, or other transit systems, it was nasty. There is a reason that the acronym SEPTA is so close to 'septic'. Just my $0.02

As a Philly resident, I like PHL airport.

1.You have a mix new modern glasss terminals, and then the old crappy concrete box terminals.

2. Many decent aircraft movements

3. Great views on approach (excluding factories)

4. Horrible long lines at times

That makes up a great airport. (except maybe #1). I enjoy flying in and out of Philly, even if i do have to make a connection somewhere else.

In regards to SEPTA, i take the R7 CH.H.East everyday, and ugh, I hate the trains. they are like from the 70's, always slow and late. Dont know why the call the regional rail "High speed rail" because they ARE NOT.

As a long time PHL photographer , I think there is good coverage of PHL. Like Paul, I also just got a digital Rebel and when I get some computer issues resolved, I'll start submitting photos. Plus I have thousands of my prints to scan from the last 15 years and some from my Dad going back to the 50's, so soon you guys will be tired of PHL pictures. As for the security long lines, I've never had any. I've probably just jinxed myself, since I'm going to LHR a week from tonight on BA.

Wow...you must be kidding...Ive seen lines that stretch back to the stairways to baggage claim in B and C at times....usually not both though, if C is crowded, B is usually empty and vice versa...glad to hear you went digital and I definitely look forward to seeing your stuff on here...your prints were awesome!
