Pilots Fighting/arguing With Each Other: Common?

Thu Apr 01, 2004 11:56 am

Has anyone ever heard or seen 2 pilots engaged in a shoving/shouting match, or, making unfriendly hand gestures towards each other(whilst taxiing)?

Unless my memory is failing me, something pretty close to this just happened out west somewhere within the last 4-6 months. As I heard the story, the F/O and PIC had been at it all day, and after they pushed back and were taxiing out, the PIC said something to the F/O that was essentially the "straw that broke the camel's back" and the F/O insisted that they come back to the gate so he could get off the aircraft.

(Personally, I have to agree with him. Not taking either his side or the PIC's side, but if their interface was that bad while they were still on the ground, putitng the aircraft in the air would not have been a sound move, and I commend the F/O for having the good sense to pull the plug...)

I can't recall who the airline was for sure (I think I know), but I do know it wasn't mine, thankfully....

I remember a few years ago. An Korean Air A-300 and the Canadian pilot was arguing with the F/O whether they should land or not. Ultimately the plane crashed short of the runway fortunately with no fatalities.

Some years ago the two pilots of a Turkish Airlines A340 got into a fist fight during approach. The story is that both were captains, one formerly military, the other one civilian trained. They argued about some procedure or another and suddenly got out of their seats and started hitting each other. There was another, young pilot in the cockpit on the jumpseat, who had recently finished his type rating, and was flying with this crew to observe airline procedures before being made a F/O. He called the cabin attendands for help, and they, with the help of some passengers restrained the two fighting pilots. The young trainee pilot took over and safely landed the plane (I think in Ankara, could have also been Istanbul). Both captains were handed over to the Turkish police and were fired the same day.

Funny stuff. I would think that with the egos onboard, there would be some tempers flaring occasionally.

Not arguing, but shortly after the Comair strike, I saw a Comair PIC give an Atlantic Southeast Airlines crew member the finger. Both were in CRJ flight decks at the time and the Comair RJ began to taxi out while the ASA RJ was parked.

It wasn't a friendly gesture either. It was more of a SCAB or "You're taking my job" gesture.

At work, our cargo apron is set up that when one plane pushes back the others have to wait till it is off the cargo apron for them to have room to pushback. And one night, a DHL 727 pushed, and took about 20 minutes to deice it. But then it had problems starting its engines. a emery worldwide (my flight) were waiting and ready to push well before the deice occured. Both aircraft were on the company frequency. And eventually the emery pilot after waiting about 30min, jumped on the frequency and said "Do you need us to come over and show you how to start your engines, LETS GO"

the DHL pilot responeded and told them they were having a bit of a problem, and it would be 5 more minutes. 10 minutes pass and the emery pilot just starts screaming to the DHL pilot, and they both start getting in to a big arguement over our company frequency.
It was quite funny

If my memory is correct the FAA still feels that the Eygptair that crashed off of Nantucket was due to the pilots fighting, because suposedly one of the pilots wanted to crash the plane.

For the most part, pilots check their egos at the door. There is no place for that nonsense on the flight deck. If I think the captain is screwing up, I am not shy (but still respectful) about bringing it to his/her attention. Naturally that goes both ways.

Pilots that do have ego problems are rare, and the ones that do usually get corrected by peer pressure... Or a good butt kicking (joking, but only mostly).

That's like saying that many porn stars are virgins......NOT

Heard of a UAL crew flashing a "DL SUCKS" paper to a passing Delta Express jet, believe it was at PBI...middle fingers anyone?  Big grin Ahh, reminds me of Super Troopers... "Did you all forget what color your plane is? Buh-bye!"

"The cockpit, what is it?" "It's the little room in the front of the plane where the pilot sits, but that's not importan

From the latest "Passenger experience nbr 357":

"I was flying with airline X when i heard from the cockpit: "I want the blond one!" "No, she is mine". And a blond stewardess was standing outside the cockpit door and smiled... She is MY wife now."

Artysman and DeltaGuy:

Note I said ego problems, not egos period. I fly with very few people who just simply cannot get over themselves. As I said, peer pressure tends to deal with that rather nicely. If you are going to fly with a complete dillweed, then you know it before you arrive: Captain Butthead is probably famous throughout the airline. Word travels fast and you will have plenty of warning.

At any rate, fights due to clashing egos are rare. I have never had it out in flight. On the overnights, well, that's another story.

It's a mercifully rare event and very unusual today; the KE A300-600 and the TK A340 were the only ones I can think of. However, I have heard heard many stories about poor CRM at Korean Air, which involved senior captains actually hitting younger FOs who got something wrong.

Hopefully this doesn't happen anymore, but I think it's fair to say that an airline without a good CRM program are more likely to have this happen. Those with CRM aren't immune, but at least a program may be designed which will anticipate something like this. Some of the better ones include procedures for the PNF taking over the controls from a PF, against his/her will.

It would be quite entertaining to see two dapper, clean-cut pilots furiously wrestling each other in the terminal, hats flying off amongst other things.

There was an incident in Melbourne a few years ago when two Qantas 767 captains actually came to blows on the tarmac over something that was said over the air waves.  Insane
