PIA To Retire Veiled FA's

Sat Apr 03, 2004 11:01 pm

A newspaper quoting the airlines director flight services has stated that all FA's that sport the veil while performing ground duties will be retired, I have yet to see a PIA FA wearing a veil, if that piece of Chiffonhanging around their necks is considered a veil that the FA's cover their heads with when on the ground then, the management is wrong, because being Muslims they're supposed to, however if some have decided to adorn the hijab(neck head and hair fully covered showing only face with full sleeved knee or ankle length jacket largely in black) while on duty than its another story.
.....up there with the best!

Airmale; at a time when it is known in the world that one (or two ? ) of the Pakistani provinces/states are governed by fundamentalists, the management of PIA apparently does not like the idea that visitors may get the impression that PIA is in support of fundamentalism. Subtleties and details about various veils and extents of "veiling" are unknown to most Westerners. I suppose, the PIA management is looking for a modern and secular image, and that is most understandable, regardless of the details.

pooh.....how terribly stupid and obnoxious! Just gives me another chance to laugh at PIA's foolish antics again. Dont know what the airline will achieve by making veiled women retire... it now seems to me PIA is slowly getting embarassed of its 'Islamic' identity (Allah forgive me) - first the colour of Islam, Green, dissapears completely from its new livery (an airline which formerly used to pride itself with its rich Islamic heritage), and now women who strictly practise the religion are being negatively biased against working with this airline! Unbelievable.

BTW, just as a side note: Musharraf is certainly bringing about a change for Pakistan, but I cannot decide whether it is for the better or the worse. Bush currently has three pets - his own dog, a white poodle, and a brown poodle, that too with a moustache and glasses. Guess who the brown one is? correct  Big grin.

Ever think this could be a business decision and not religious or political?

On a daily basis the world sees terrorist acts carried out against innocent victims by fundamentalist muslums in the name of "Allah". This causes an understandable (and I might add; intentional on the part of the terrorist element) fear amongst many who are not fundamentalist muslums.

How long can an airline whose employees scare a huge segment of their potential passengers stay in business?

I do not write this with any disrespect intended to peace-loving muslums.

I say this is a by-product of the fear spread by the terrorist elements which all the world's muslums will one day have to decide if it is worth the prejudice it inspires.

Sayem55:

Reality is reality. Fact is, fundamentalist muslum symbols scare a huge segment of PIA's potential traffic. Who you choose to blame for that fear is your choice. It doesn't matter in terms of selling tickets.

Sayem55; I spoke about the 'image' and not about the company as such. And by assuming visitors to Pakistan have a minimal 'insight' you prove really to be an optimist. Visitors to Egypt for example very often find it difficult to see the difference between Amun, Aton and Prophet Mohammed.

It has to be mentioned that the old PIA-livery was one of the best in the world, while the new one is among the worst. And I found the green colour particularily nice. And there of course is a difference between a light colourful scarf and the tight black or white scarves or even veils seen so often. As it is difficult to establish differences, the PIA management may feel forced however to stop it all, in order to produce a more modern and secular appearance.
