LAX To SYD...Day Vs Night

Mon Apr 05, 2004 12:19 pm

I'll be flying on QF to SYD from LAX in two weeks. QF12 departs LAX at 1030pm and arrives at 605am. The only daylight will be at sunrise once landed in SYD? The return departs SYD QF149 at 940am...this flight will encompass only daylight? Can't wait to experience QF way up front in seat 1A!!!

Anyone know if Qantas service is any good? Would like to go to SYD and I think UAL also goes. Any suggestions on UAL v. Qantas? (and what the hell does Qantas mean in Aussie speak anyway? any one know?)

"Anyone know if Qantas service is any good?"

On the Pacific its very good compared to what other airlines offer. You'll also more than likely fly on 747-400ER's which are practically brand new.

"Would like to go to SYD and I think UAL also goes. Any suggestions on UAL v. Qantas?"

There is no competition, QF has a far superior product to UAL.

ASTROJET707,
You will definitely enjoy every bit of the Qantas expierience... I flew LAX-SYD (QF 108) last June and enjoyed every bit of my flight... everything from the food, service, and IFE was top notch... especially since you were all the way up in 1A... I was back in 68B :0( Email me if you have any questions

ASTROJET707: The flight from SYD-LAX will be half-daylight, half-nighttime. It's just a short morning/afternoon and short night.

As for QF12, yes, the only daylight you'll see is shortly before landing at SYD. QF12 is a great flight to sleep on (which you'll have no problem doing in F). Don't sleep right away, leave it for about 5-6 hours, you should be able to get a decent night's sleep and arrive in the morning feeling fine.

I recently flew the LAX-SYD flight. Taking off out of LAX is awesome. You'll leave on 25R and start to rise from the ground near T4 (AA terminal). Usually, the marine layer is present, so by the time you get to the end of the runway, you're already in the clouds at 1800'. However, once you break the clouds, you can see every star in the sky! It's SO beautiful! On my flight, I had seat 56A, so I could see the outboard engine on the left side. It was glowing due to the fact that it was so hot! After that, you keep climbing... and climbing... and climbing... until you level off. Sadly, the last bit of light you see is that of LAX slowly falling behind you.

My flight was in August, so I'm not sure how the time change will affect your flight, but landing in August meant NO sunlight on arrival into Sydney. About 20 minutes before landing, you can see the faint lights of the Australian coast, and it just gets closer and closer. Looking out the window, you see nothing but black.... then all of the sudden... you see the rush of the blue taxi lights zooming by as you land. An April landing should be able to give you a semi-sunny morning, as it is Fall there now.

Coming home back to LAX is unique. My flight left at 930am as well. We took off from Sydney on rwy 16 and just like LAX, kept climbing, and climbing. One tihng I remember very well, was how FAST it took to go dark. You are in the air for an hour or two as you pass over New Caledonia. But, you are also blasting through the time zones, so night comes very fast. I remember very well how it was bright daylight, then soon it was dusk, then it was golden orange, and then black! It stayed nighttime for me until about 100mi out from LAX. Passing over Catalina Island the sun began to rise, and then you go over Long Beach and you can spot out individual buildings in the light. You do your U-turn as you line up for 25L and then the light begins to shine over the Los Angeles Basin. By the time you land at around 630am, do customs, get your bags and come out, it's bright daylight, and LAX is hopping back into business!

Enjoy your flight! It's AWESOME!

Myself I perfer QF 8 which currently only runs on Sun, Wed, Thr & Fri at the moment, but it leaves LAX at 1300 and arrives SYD 20:35, which is great if you are not connecting in SYD.

SYD arrivals is usually just about derserted at that time, a quick C&I clerance and off to your hotel, you can be in a downtown hotel by 22:00, easy. Get a good nights sleep and you feel great the next day.

Its still a long flight, of course, but to me it seems to go easier than the overnighters and it is daylight untill just two or three hours out of SYD.

I really like the flight from LAX-SYD leaving LAX late in the evening. It allows me to leave MSP at a decent time, have some extra time at LAX for spotting (and fudge time in case of delays enroute to LAX), and then leave late at night. You then stay up for a couple hours with the meal and maybe a movie. You can fall asleep easily (since you've been up for so many hours) and then you wake up 1-2 hours before landing in SYD with the morning light.

Astrojet707,

I hope you file a trip report...I would like to hear all about the experience in QF F. 1A! I'm so jealous. Even I could tolerate a flight that long up front. Have a great time Down Under!

Thanks everybody for your comments! I am looking forward to the flights.
I had hoped to be booked on QF8, however I bet it is difficult to get award travel on it if you are not a member of QF frequent flyer program. Nonetheless, I feel very lucky to have two first class round-trip tickets from USA to Australia. Thanks in advance to all QF crew, ground and ramp staff.

What does your last post mean ?

"I had hoped to be booked on QF8, however I bet it is difficult to get award travel on it if you are not a member of QF frequent flyer program"

It makes no different what airline you are a FF with all oneworld carriers get the same allocation of redemption seats - no favouritsm is showed to QF FF's over AA or CX etc ...

Gemuser is totally right - QF8 wins handsdown ... take it its the best for F Class service .. you stay awake a long time and really enjoy the flight - get to SYD at 2030 go to your hotel and go fast to sleep ! NO JETLAG !

Happy flying on QF !

I booked my trip through the Continental OnePass partner desk and QF8 was unavailble for booking, it was not sold out. The CO rep stated QF would not allow award travel on that flight.

"It makes no different what airline you are a FF with all oneworld carriers get the same allocation of redemption seats - no favouritsm is showed to QF FF's over AA or CX etc ..."

Not quite true. While all FFs have access to the inventory, QF opens the invnetory to its own FFs a month prior to it opening for non-QF FFs. As such, availability is severely limited. With AA no longer allowing CX as an option to get from North America to Australia on an award ticket, award redemption, especially in First Class, has diminished.

ASTROJET707, enjoy the trip. I flew QF in F in August 2002 from BKK to SYD and enjoyed the experience, although I though CX's service was nicer (shows how spoiled I've become). I did a very detailed report on this (and other) flights, which I posted last summer. Do a search and you'll find it. I will be flying QF again this November on the QF 001 from SYD to LHR via BKK, but I'll be in 1K.

Hi PresRDC,

I agree with your first paragraph comment. I am still amazed I got two FIRST award seats. Thanks for your comments. I'll let you know how QF12 and QF149 turn out. Have a great time in 1K!!!!

ASTROJET707

PS. I have put together a chart of my award trips(future)

1) LAX-AKL-HBA/LST-AKL-LAX*J on NZ
2) SFO-HKG-SFO*J on SQ
3) ORD-MAN-ORD*J on BD
4) LAX-CDG-LAX*J on AF or EWR-DXB-KUL-DXB-EWR*F on MH
I am assuming obtaing a F award on AF will be very difficult with their new fleet/cabin changes.
5) DTW-TPE-DTW*upgrade to J on NW
6) ORD-IST-ORD*J on Turkish

I am a quintessential MILEAGE WHORE!!!!!!!!!

ASTROJET707, can I ask what you do to earn so much mileage to be able to travel around the world on FF awards? I, too, am looking for different ways to earn free travel, but unfortunately my job is rather stationary.

By the way, I flew LAX-SYD-AKL and AKL-LAX on QF 2 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed my flights. My wife noticed that our outbound flight was handled by an all-male crew  Insane. I do not know whether that is a common occurrence with QF. Have a great trip... we'll be looking forward to your trip report.

G'day mate!

Another reason I supect QF8 is harder to book is that I would assume the number of award tickets is less than on the night time flights because the middle of the day departure CAN be more weight limited because of higher day time tempatures limit take off perfromance and allowances for head winds is more geanrous fo QF8 because a diversion for fuel to Nandi, Fiji is particularly expensive because the time taken means it cannot arrive in SYD before the 2300 curfew so it has to sit a Nandi for 8 hours or so.

I make the run to DFW via LAX frequently and would pass on the following:

QF 744-ERs are great! Interiors are 777 style. The ER seems to climb out faster than the regular 744. It used to seem like 8 hours before you could make it to 35,000 feet on the west-bound leg. Not fun if there was weather about.

I would recommend the day flight out of LAX. That lets you enjoy all the gadgets in F (last time I was in 1A David Hasselhoff was in the pod to my right, QF MEL... I broke the arm-rest VCR, well it ate my 8mm tape, and a cute FA girl was climbing over me trying to fix it.) The pajamas QF gives you in F actually last, unlike Singapore, BA and AF -- after a few washings they shrink by 50%.

If you take the day flight, you should use Jet Ease / No Jet Lag from www.nojetlag.com -- they work great! If you want to sleep, ask your doctor about Lorazepam. I flew SYD-LAX on UA and took one during the takeoff roll and woke up on descent into LA.

CX889,

I am field service/technical support for a plastics packaging manufacturer and travel about 50k-130k miles/year. Most of my miles are on UA followed by DL then AA.

ASTROJET707, I'm pretty much a mileage junkie myself, but do it all on American, as most of my flying is leisure and my credit card is tied to AAdvantage. I earn my miles on Around the World tickets and almost always spend them on First Class travel (J class if F is not offered in a given market).

I've done the following award trips using AA miles (all in first class):

JFK-(AA)-LAX-(LA)-SCL-(LA)-EZE-(LA)-SCL-(LA)-JFK
JFK-(AA)-SFO-(CX)-HKG-(CX)-JNB-(CX)-HKG-(CX)-JFK

I have the following booked for this year:

AA), Japan">NRT-(AA)-JFK-(AA)-SFO-(JL)-AA), Japan">NRT (First Class)
AA), Japan">NRT-(JL)-AA), China">PEK // PVG-(JL)-AA), Japan">NRT (Business Class)

PresRDC,

I used to have a CO mc, DL amex, UA va...I pretty much use my corporate amex for everything and I can transfer miles to CO and DL if I need to reach a mileage threshold for an award. I you know anyone that wants to unload some UAL miles let me know. I am trying to build a larger balance.

How was Lan Chile? So do you fly RTW in Y or J or F? Have you flow in F on JAL?

ASTROJET707,

I do all my RTWs in First Class. Originating in places like Cairo or Stockholm (in 2002), the fare has been good (around $6500 for a five continent RTW) and is a great value for money. The specific product I buy is the Oneworld Explorer, Oneworld's continent (as opposed to mileage) based RTW product.

Lan Chile is outstanding in F and nice in J. I think its F service rivals, if not exceeds, that of the other Oneworld carriers. Its seats, while flat, lack some of the bells and whistles of the "pod" style F seats used by BA, QF and CX. In terms of food, LA wins hands down. I call LA the undiscovered gem of the Oneworld Alliance, although whether it is truly undiscovered is debatable.

Never flown JAL in F. This November will be my first time. I thought about flying JAL on my outbound from AA), Japan">NRT, but since I will be arriving at AA), Japan">NRT from HKG on CX, I decided that I did not want to change terminals and will just stick with AA. On my return flight to AA), Japan">NRT, I'll be connecting to another JAL flight to AA), China">PEK, so it made sense to stick with JAL for the whole trip.

PresRDC,

How many RTWs do you fly annually? I assume you originate RTW outside the US to save $$$? I have priced some at $10k to 14k including CPT/JNB and Australia...have not flown a RTW yet.

I am looking forward to flying on MH before their cabin/service upgrade/modifications. While suite style F cabins are nice there is something nostalgic about 2x2 seating in a big FClass seat. I have flown BA First and it was very comfortable. I imagine QF First is very similar.

Thanks again for your comments.

ASTROJET707,

One every other year. I work on a two year cycle in which I earn in year one using a RTW ticket and burn in year two. 2004 is an earning year, 2005 will be a burning year.

QF First is very similar to BA, but the seats are not angled relative to the wall.
Neither compare to CX (for overall package) and LA (for food), though.

The one drawback to my strategy is that I am limited in the airlines I fly. It would be nice to branch-out a bit, but I guess I did that by flying Egypt Air First Class to Cairo to start my most recent RTW.
