US Air MD-80 Paint Scheme

Mon Apr 05, 2004 1:07 pm

I am searching desparately for a US Air MD-80 in the new scheme. Did they ever paint these birds? I do see one or two 727's in the scheme, but I cannot find the MD-80. I would die to see how this plane looked in that scheme if it existed. I can't imagined why they visualiized having the the 727 so long that it deserved the new scheme and the MD-80 didn't.

The 313 USAir MD-80 shots in the database are hard to locate since most are marked as DC-9-81 aircraft.

No US M80 was ever painted in the new scheme.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

And so ends my efforts... Thanks Yyz717.

A great number of electrons would be pleased, that I did not inconvenience them with my desperate but futile searches..  Smile

Yyz717,

USAir's MD-80 fleet was displaced in favor of the A320.

The only 727s to receive the new scheme flew on the Northeast Corridor Shuttle and were used as "backups" while the new Airbus 319/320s were integrated into the system.

As mentioned above, no MD-80 ever received the U.S AIRWAYS navy blue fuselage paint job. They did have the current grey interior though. All the while, many still had PSA placards in the galleys.

Wasn't USAirways supposed to be an "all airbus" fleet. I thought that what was said when USAir became USAirways and was going thru the entire transformation.

US will eventually become a all airbus fleet, with exception to the Express side. It will take time though.

I think, but not shure, ,but there might of been 1 MD-80 that had the new "flag" tail with the rest in UsAir c/s, I will look for a pic.

I can say for a fact that US did have one of the MD-80's in the newer paint scheme. It had a silver body and a blue (same color as the new paint) on the tail with a flag on it. I remember specifically seeing one at BUF while US Air still operated them...i'll look it up.

There wasn't any hybrid color MD-80, however DC9-30 N928VJ got repainted with a new-style tail and shuttle titles to operate on the short-lived IAD-LGA flights.

The B727s that got the look underwent heavy structural repair work and needed to be painted. They were always in a white fuselage scheme since they came from Trump Shuttle and never were in a polished look with US Airways.

The MD-80 was never painted in the 'patriotic' color scheme.
