Tue Apr 06, 2004 7:17 am

Adding to the fun of the forums today, I thought it would be interesting to discuss our favorite planes...The NW DC-9s!!!

There was a thread earlier that got locked, it mentioned that there were already a few that have been put out to pasture. If you know of any that are being retired or returning to service, mention them here. Otherwise, what was the status of your last DC-9 flight?
Was it new or old colors?
What series was it?
What is going to replace it?
Was it clean or dirty?
Was it loud or quiet?
Add your own responses.

Have fun  Big thumbs up

I don't think we've heard the latest on the Northwest DC-9 story. As for myself, I'm not the biggest fan of the aircraft. I don't mind old planes but the NW DC-10 is sooo much cooler, if you ask me. Circa 2050 the last DC-9 should finally be gone from the NW fleet. Three cheers for the NW fleet, however.

Even though it's not technically NW, I am a huge fan of the Saab 340's that are operated by XJ. I have flown on a few of them in the past year or so and find the humming of the engines tends to lull me right to sleep.

Never flown on a NWA DC9, only on other airlines, but I really hope they never retire!

I got off a model 40 Friday...N750NW in new colors. I was moved up to the front so it was ok...clean and quiet ....in row three. That's the third time I was on N750NW.
I feel NW will replace the DC 9 30's and 40's with the EM 190 or 195. They are cheaper then an A318 and will have about the range NW needs for the replacement aircraft. The 50's will probably be replaced with a few more A319's.
In the April inflight book, NW had 164 DC9's listed. I will be on four more nines in mid April.

Was on a -10 last week, DTW-CVG. I'll be on another this week. Was in the old colors. I understand the -10 will be gone later this year. Sad, but I'm sure the XJ RJ85 is much cheaper to run. Even with fuel costs higher, the XJ crews have to be cheaper than NW's current DC9 rates.

Last flight was this past October 5, MEM-OMA. I was in I believe seat 21A, two rows up from the final row on a DC-9-30 and with a nice window view of the engine intake. It was LOUD, but fun as I enjoyed that buzz on takeoff and the engine throb at cruise. Those were common in most of my 727 flights and its nice to know that the Nine does it just about the same way.

I think many of the routes from OMA to MEM are now CRJ based, but the NW Nines are still a common site at Eppley and I hope they continue to stay that way as our airport doesn't have much of a requirement for noise abatement on takeoff.

Last week I flew the NW -30, -40 and -50 models on the same trip! I loved every one of them. Clean, quiet (up front) and solid. A great aircraft.
