What Can I Expect At Air Berlin?

Wed Apr 07, 2004 5:06 am

I am due to fly STN to PMI in June after getting a real stunning deal (50 pounds for TWO persons return). Can you guys tell me more about what service level I should expect? Should be a 738 with winglet? (I hope the winglets help the plane fly faster and higher) Are the seats comfortable? Any meals... etc..
I am very happy to have a chance to fly this cheap, HAVE service airline (unlike ryanair)! Please do tell me more, cheers!

Hi Musapapaya
My step-dad flew STN-DUS earlier this year and he was impressed with the service. He got meals on the way out to DUS, but due to heavy turbulence their was no food on the way back, some safety regulation!! Apart from that I think he really enjoyed the service.

As to what plane you will get, I can't really tell you! My dad got a -700 on the way out and a -400 coming back, and with AB owning -800's with and without winglest, Bae 146's and now Fokker 100's their really is a wide selection you could fly on!! Anyways, enjoy your flight...

I flew last summer with one of their "Majorca-Shuttles" from EDDL to LEPA. The plane, B738 with winglets, was packed (also called Majorca-bomber therefore) which I believe is quite normal. A nice meal, free drinks and friendly service made it a flight I'd book again!

Hi Musapapaya,

beside BA AB is my favorite airline. The service is much better then on the most other charter or lowcost airlines I could experience.
I flew several times in Germany and to the Canary islands with AB. The staff is very friendly and young (I have never seen an AB f/a older then 30).
The meals are ok - it is the normal inflight stuff. They have folding screens every 3rd row on their 737-86J. On this relativly short flight you can watch some TV-series and cartoons.
I think the chance to be on a 737-86J is quite good but they had some changes in their fleet during the last year which mean that you could also be on a 734 or a leased 738.
If my memories are right they leased some 738 from transavia.

The dark site are the cramped seats -184 in 738; 167 in 734 and if you are a non-smoker than you might dislike the smoking area in the back.

I think you will enjoy it!

AIR BERLIN is truly a teriffic carrier as far as LCCs go
The inflight service is very nice and yes you will be a little cramped but I think you will enjoy their great hospitality.

Hope you enjoy your trip on AB ! Please post your experience here when you return.

This thread is in dire need of some plugging! Big grin

Please check out this excellent (cough, cough!) trip report covering a roundtrip from CGN to PMI on AB by yours truly in January 2004:  Smile

Hi

I am flying Stansted to Berlin with AB in a few months time.

I do they give you meals and drinks as standard included in the fare?

I flew STN-DUS with AB in January and found they were pretty good all round for a LCC.

It was enough to inspire me to write my first (and admittedly only so far) trip report. Food and drinks were definitely part of the package and it was a no-smoking flight.

Yes one of the better LCCs service-wise, but the seat pitch is sheer terror, so if you're about the same size as me (190cm or around 6'2''-6'3""), you won't have much fun, but that is of course not a prob of Air Berlin but of all LCCs!
I know it's only VfB but I like it!

I'm also a tall guy and I have survived more than 5h in an AB 738. The old Hapag Lloyd A-310s are much more like a cramped nightmare. It wasn't fun but okay.
Smoking is only on their longer flights allowed like NUE-TFS or TXL-PMI. I don't know whether there is a difference between flights from the UK and from Germany. Maybe their City-Shuttles are non-smoking.

As Capitol8s stated AB is service-wise superior to other LCC: very friendly stuff, IFE and real in-flight meals.

My last flight with BA was the last AB Flight to TXL in 2003. It was on the evening of 31st December. The flight was quite special to me. The whole flight crew was in party-mood. Instead of showing us the in-flight map we could watch "Dinner for one" and to enjoy this we got some pretzels...

AB knows how to satisfy their customers.
