Live ATC During 9/11...

Wed Apr 07, 2004 7:16 am

Just flown with United on several domestic flights, I wondered if they turned off the live ATC when they realised what was happening that awful day. Did pax hear what was going on? Just courious, but I guess you sometimes can get more information than you really needed!!!

My limited understanding is that most aircraft in the skies had all forms of IFE turned off. I may be wrong however.

I think you are right about the IFE turned off on 9/11. My best mate flew into Sydney on SQ221 SIN-SYD on 9/11 and he didn't have a clue what happen during his flight reason being he didn't have any IFE (was switched off).

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. We are tonight’s entertainment!

Kind of surprising that people on a flight to SYD or on any flights not going to the US would care so much about 9/11 as awful an event as it was though...

If you are onboard an airplane and you suddenly find out that some people are currently using them as bombs, im quite sure that many pax would go bezerk, even though this was happening on the other side of the earth...

My understanding is that during the attacks, ATC was trying to keep things calm, reason being, they did not want to alert any other potential sleepers already in the cockpits. Are there any from the flight deck here flying that day???

on my flight MIA SFO the IFE was switched off as soon as the captain was given the orders to land...it was switched on temporarily to inform pax of new destination, (in our case, OKC) but was off again in less than 2 minutes. all audio was also switched off.

there were no announcements on our flight. the cabin crew didnt tell us anything, though they were clearly upset, some were in tears.

what was very eerie, was that there was a program on one channel from Discovery, talking about what would happen if an earthquake struck new york, and an expert came on and mentioned all the major buildings in NYC, and said, 'the twin towers would not fall...' but at that exact moment, they had already been struck by the planes.

As Cabin Crew/Flight Attendant it don't matter what remote part of the world somthing like this happens... it always brings it home... its a risky business in this day in age! for both flight and cabin staff! Everytime I hear of anything like this I can't help but think what they must have thought, how they reacted and what was the last thing to go through their mind.
God only knows how I would react.... all the training we are put through by airline never quite prepares you for the day someone pulls out a knife and is putting at risk you and your 365 passengers.
