MD-11 Your Thoughts

Wed Apr 07, 2004 9:59 am

This is my second favorite jet,the 747 being number 1. So, because it didn't meet it's performance specs, is that the only reason it didn't sell well?

The 777 was on it's way.

I like the MD-11 too.
I like the fact that the wings are more swepted back than the DC-10.

All newer jets have less swept wings.

I love the MD-11 too, flew it 4 times from JFK-GRU. These guys are right though, the 777 killed it and it's not so practical these days. Too bad, I like it more than the 767.

I think it's a shame to see airplanes that young being stored, some being only around 10 years old... I hope they all end up cargo or charter instead of sitting there, or worst broken up.

I imagine they can be bought second hand at a bargain and there a plenty of parts availible.
They would be ideal for charter or budget carriers.

I wish Hawaiian Airlines bought these as there DC-10 replacement. I miss there shiny silver DC-10s flying here to SFO.  Sad

Doesn't the MD-11 and 777 share a common fuselage?

Well they're 2-5-2 seating like most 777s but the MD-11 uses the same fuselage as the DC-10.

MD-11. Got 3 words:

Amazing. Beautiful. Priceless.

Such a shame that airlines are getting rid of it!!! I personally think Varig's colors look THE BEST on the MD11

I can't say I ever liked working with the MD-11, though I didn't spend much time with it. I also didn't much care for the MD-88s or MD-90s either. Not that they were bad aircraft. At least they didn't corrode. However, the documentation and drawings left a lot to be desired, when compared to the Boeings, especially the newer models (i.e. 757 & 767).

One of the MD-11's biggest problems was that McD tried to spend as little money as possible and kept to many features from the DC-10. This really dated the airframe. Of course they did some things right, Boeing is using the trailing edge shape from the MD-11 on the 777-200LR/300ERs.

I had the pleasure of flying on one with Delta last year. It was a great plane to fly on. Too bad they're becoming difficult to come by. I'm partial to the MD-11 in Delta's classic widget livery myself.

Is this another "new" pax MD-11 for Finnair?

Great plane from a passenger perspective. Heard it has a rudder too small compromising low-speed maneuverability.

Yes, forgot to add the three elements mentioned by KLM11 to my MD-11 recipe of good features. Don't know about the best aircraft aviation has ever seen though. Would have to say in my opinion the B747 and the Concorde contradict the MD-11's reign as the best aircraft.

It looks better than a 777 or A330!I still like the A340 and IL-96 for this class of aircraft.

I read or saw a program once and it talked abou how nice the MD11 was for the pax but that the cockpit is just awful. The seating in very uncomfortable. Are there any M11 pilots out there to lend credence to this statement?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi!

First of all I must say that my relation with the MD11 was a lucky one! I was on my way to California and I had already my flights booked with BA from LIS/LHR/SFO flying the 777 and return on the 744 when I got a last minute fare from a friend in Switzerland with SWISS. Due to the fact that for us, has a family of 4 the price rules we cancelled BA and opted for SWISS. I checked out the airplanes that I'll be flying and I was pleased too, it will be my chance to fly i n a MD11! My kids complained because they prefered the 777 due to the PTV's and the service but after some talk they were ok! On the 16th. December 2002 all the family boarded SWISS MD11 HB-IWM "Liskaam" for our long flight to LAX. It was impressive the take-off, very, very powerfull, then right away a long and tight left turn heading to the ocean. SWISS configuration was 3-5-2 and the space of the MD11 was generous, no PTV but the intertainment was not that bad! The flight proceeded nicely all way to LAX, but due to head winds and a last minute change to our runway at LAX ( we landed from the Pacific Ocean ) gave us a total time of flying of 12:45, the longest fligh I ever had! The landing was quite hard, there was a big storm at LAX and the plane touched very heavy first time, it became airborne again and finnally he landed for good, I felt at that time that having an engine in the tail might punish a bit the MD11 in adverse weather conditions, but in the end it was a awesome experience and I feel quite lucky, on the way back from LAX no more MD11, it was a A340-313X, so I'm glad I tried and tasted this great airliner.
Regards

Like it a lot, and I'm quite happy to live in FRA, where I can see so many of those birds, most of them LH Cargo, 14 right now, with 5 still to be added (replacing the 742  Sad).

Flew them a few times in Asia, e.g. Thai, and liked it, too! From the outside it's one of the more interesting aircraft optics-wise! Always a reason to reach for the digicam  Smile

I am Brazilian and a Star Alliance (Varig-Smiles) Gold member.
I usually fly Varig or any other Star Alliance just because of the airmiles and of course for the convenience of flying non-stop from London, Paris, Frankfurt, New York, etc to GRU.
I don't have and I never had any problem flying the MD-11's.
First they look wonderful and they are very quiet as well.

I hope Varig keep them for a while!!

As my username implies, I'm an L1011 fan, but the MD11 is a close second. I have three 1/200 scale MD's in my office, so you can guess that I like the look of the 11. The "wavy gravy" Delta is my fav. Of 'em all.

I think, as has been implied before, economics played a major part in the failure of the line. Why pay for three engines, when two can do the job? I wondered WHY, when it became apparent that the "triple seven" was coming from Boeing, and that a new generation of engines that could do the job were also being readied, that McD/D never thought to re-engineer the 11 into a twin. I suspect that would have cost plenty, as well. And I'll bet there are those among us, here, that probably could give us more insight into McD/D's MD11 things....

If you don't stand for SOMETHING, you'll fall for ANYTHING.

I was looking at this book I had purchased on Tri-Jets and they did a wonderful feature on the MD-11. I was amazed by how many airlines had either ordered and/or operated the MD-11. If the MD-11 had lived up to its original performance specifications, I really think it could have given the 777 a run for its money.

Almost all former/current DC-10 operators at the time had either ordered or purchased the MD-11. I was astonished to see how many airlines were in fact operating the type. I was surprised Delta ordered the aircraft because I remember how hard-pressed they were to get rid of the DC-10s they got after the Western acquisition. But KLM, JAL, American, Varig, Swissair, and countless other airline had ordered this wonderful aircraft.

I was wondering if anyone could explain why the MD-11 didn't live up to its original performance specifications. I know the most common thing I hear is it didn't provide the range MDC promised, but I've never heard "why"???

I still love the MD-11. After the 777 and 747, it's one of the most beautiful aircraft.

For me its the same as with TriStarEnvy: Its my number two close behind the L1011. I flew them on DL (FRA-LAX, LAX-FRA, FRA-CVG and ATL-BRU) and SR (GVA-JFK and ZRH-LAX). Wonderful aircraft with very clear windows (as far as I have experienced).

Only ever flew MD-11 once, Swissair ZRH-JNB, it was a 10 hour daylight flight and packed to the rafters which means I don't remember it fondly, I do recall it had the biggest flightdeck I've ever been in!

What are you referring to? The large roomy two man EFIS cockpit, it is so large that you could fit an extra crew +1 using the jumpseats in there.
