NWA DC-10 In N/c Paint Scheme Photos Are Online!

Thu Apr 08, 2004 1:14 pm

The long awaited NW new paint scheme DC-10 photos are finally here! N226NW was captured by TJ O'Keefe this afternoon. They're in the upload queue as we speak (unfortunately the screeners haven't gotten to them yet).

TJ O'Keefe has allowed scaled down photos of this plane to be posted on www.mspupdate.com. Personally, I think that TJ's photos really capture the plane well. Whether the paint scheme looks good on the DC-10, well that's for you to decide.

Note: I decided to start a new thread because the old thread was VERY long and now has irrelevant information.

I have seen the shots already...The shots look very nice, but I must say that I am not a huge fan of the livery on the DC10. I guess we'll find out what everyone else thinks when the screeners get them.

I think that the DC10 looks great. I give NWA a lot of credit and respect for keeping 2 very old types of planes in service for so long. THe DC10 and the DC9 aver very old but are still flying strong for NWA. I have much more respect for NWA than I had a few years ago. I do hope to fly on some of their planes since I have never flown NW before.

Pass the Pepto... The photography is great but the livery is horrific! The DC-10 looked so graceful in the bowling shoe livery. It now appears as if a fourth grader's cartoon nightmare has made its way to an aircraft. The "NWA" logo is reminds me of the 80's rap group and the NW logo points to the northeast on the starboard side. I know thats been discussed here and many have offered an explanation of "progress" and "where we are going" but any logo that requires interpretation negates the purpose. The silver fuselage is tolerable but the NWA erases the identity of Northwest and the "redtail" logo is about 14 steps backwards.

For all the dutch interested spotters : It is at SPL/EHAM at the moment, located at the R-apron. It is leaving at 16.35 pm as NW47 to DTW.

They should have painted the engines red too. Now that the engines looks a little 'white' in the pic in post #12, we'll probably be seeing alot of soot behind the tail engines thrust reversers. The D10 looks nice but I dont think this livery 'fits' very well. But it looks great on a 753.

It's not a bad livery, infact I think it looks pretty good but I like the old one better. There's just not enough colour on it.

Congrats TJ on finally getting it up. I just think that the DC-10 body is too large and rounded for the all silver scheme. I also wish that the red had gone down all the way to #2. But it doesn't look bad. At least it isn't an ugly faded 'pink'.

Wow, its amazing what a decent livery can do! I might be tempted to fly on the beast now rather than avoiding her, the NW DC-10s at LGW normally look so old and tired (what are they like inside?) Same with the new Aeroflot livery - I could even be persuaded to go on a TU-134!!

TJ-

Great shot of the DC-10. The detail cast the new livery and especially the airplane in a very flattering light.

One question you could maybe help me out with...is the fuselage on the DC-10 silver like the rest of the other planes in the new livery? It almost looks more white than silver but that could be my monitor.

As far as comments on the livery, I agree that it might have looked better if the red on the tail extended all the way down to the #2 engine, but I understand why they wanted it to end symmetrically with the fin at the end of the engine. Sometimes great tail logos lose something in translation on the DC-10/MD-11. I guess we'll have to live with it.

To those who take issue with the compass rose not pointing to the northwest on the right side, the arrow is facing in the same direction as the one on the left side. At least this way they're both pointing to the northwest from one point of view. It gives it a more unified look. And it's not an earthshattering update. It's nice and subtle. Times always change in aviation and we need to learn to adapt with them or get left in the proverbial jetwash.

It is the same as all the other paint jobs on all of the NWA fleet, it changes colors when it is hit by different light..

I think it looks great. I agree with others though that it would have been even better if the red were extended down the tail a bit. Perhaps I'm in the minority on this one, but I like NWA's new livery MUCH better than the old one (which I never really cared for). Much cleaner, more professional look.

Thanks for the comments. Do not check your monitor, I thought this plane was very flat looking when I saw it. Even when the sun was on it, it was not glowing like a 757 or Airbus. Maybe it takes a few days to set in, or maybe the light was weird at MSP. I'll have to check it out again on monday.

You betcha. On Delta's MD-11's, the ol Widget design looked terrible on the vert stab....they stopped the widget just above the engine, which made it super small....and put DELTA on the #2 engine. It just lost it's magic. Now when they painted the one in the new DL scheme, it looked great, as they treated the tail like it was any other tail, kept the logo going. Nw shoulda made the #2 red as well.

I like the paint, but I don't understand what it is trying to show. Whats with the arrow in the circle, it points North East, and I don't see anything resembling a NW or NWA except on the fuselage. The old one had something like that up on the tail where you could make out an NW inside it. Is there any rhyme or reason to this liverly. anyone?

As stated before - any logo that requires an explanation defeats the purpose of changing it especially when the prior logo provided Northwest with an identity. Now it looks as if management accepted the "low bid" design and they are trying to define its meaning to everyone... "one side points to the northwest and the other sides shows where we are headed... forward. WHATEVER!

The silver fuselage is tolerable and I agree the the #2 nacelle and remainder of the tail should have been red as well as the #1 and #3 nacelles. The only problem now is that Northwest would now look like Virgin.

Bring back the bowling show livery... it provided a sound identity, was timeless, and just looked good!

A lack of planning on your behalf does not create an emergency on my behalf.

What's up with the flag near the back? It looks like it should be moved over more so it is under the registration number. Isn't this how all NW aircraft are in the new scheme?

You know, with all that I've said about the new livery being better than the Bowling Shoe, I am beginning to regret it. The DC-10 looks good in the new livery, but it looked better in the old livery. The Bowling Shoe is definently more colorful than the new livery, but the new livery is shinier. I think NWA should have had their logo cover more of the tail. The NWA livery is gorgeous, and while the DC-10s may have looked better in the older livery, it's good that they are being repainted to look like the rest of NWA's planes...there is nothing wrong with the paint scheme in the DC-10s except that it is almost completely devoid of color. More color would be nice, but it's still a good livery.

Hope it comes to LGW very soon - takes off as i leave work Big grin

Truly though, i've liked all Northwests liveries, and always think the Northwest Orient DC-10's & 747's had a mysteriously great appeal, it was so solid looking , and looked though it mean's business.

If i were to read a book on any US carriers, i would want it to be NW !

Great look. Can't wait to see it near sunset and if it shines golden like the other liveries.

I supposed with all the criticism for the compass pointing northeast and the compass point northwest they may as well just change the airline name to Northern World Airlines which when you think about how few ops they have in the southern hemisphere may be the next step. They just need to change a little bitty logo under the massive NWA letters. Then nobody will have comments about the compass!!

I have said this many times before. PAINT THE WHOLE TAIL RED! PERIOD! It just looks like they ran out of paint again. I like the rest of the look on the DC-10. but something is missing on the tail. that goes for all the NW planes. One more question. how many DC-10's will they paint?

The reason they didn't paint the tail for the 1,000th time is so the arc of the compass is the same on all of the airplanes, it may look funny to some people but it is a uniform look for all of there fleet...
