Olympic Airlines A340 Fleet - Downsized!?

Thu Apr 08, 2004 6:47 pm

Yesterday on my way from work home, I printed out the newest version of Athens Airport timetable, and had what to discover:

Olympic flies only to NEW YORK daily at 12.30 and to Toronto via Montreal on 12-4-6- days around 9 am or at noon.

What is this!? They used to fly to Sydney all until recently and apparently, flights to Johanesburg wre axed as well!? When was this? Oh my God, I am obviously out of date with Olympic developments, but what happened with their remaining A-340s!?
Can anyone tell!

Re. Storage A340
Is this not a bit strange with the summer Olympics coming up in August?

Right after they discontinued the Sydney route, the airline was actually thinking about of getting rid of all 4 A343s, and code-sharing with other airlines for long-haul international flights. I know that this would never have happened, but it just goes to show the state of the airline, for management to even consider such a radical move. They ended up keeping the A340s, but redeploying some on their most profitable short routes like LHR. This was reported in Flight International and Airliner World magazines.

If Olympic Airways will get rid of their A340-300's, it doesn't have a big affect on the Olympic Games. Other airlines will just fill in the gaps and fly the people to Athens, there's no need for Olympic Airways to fly all those people to Athens, if there's simply no money for that. Just my two cents.

I can't imagine that Olympic Airlines is any more prepared for the Games than the City of Athens is!

Well, even if they do get rid of their A340-300s, some will definently be picked up by other airlines. Those aircraft are still very new. It seems like so many airlines are putting some of their newest airplanes in temporary storage. United has put N208UA in storage along with its other Boeing 777s (hopefully all will be back in service with United). It's sad to see such new jetliners rotting away in the desert.

Hmm, minor technicality-- the point of them being in the desert is so that they wont rot  Big grin

Currently, two 340's are parked. The flight to JNB is operated with one of the A300's with a stop in Cairo. Previously, when the A300's were used to JNB, they had a technical stop in Nairobi, but the bills went unpaid and Olympic is refused landing there until bills are paid up.

VSgirl, they're gonna use their A340s on some of their flights during the summer (OA259). I remember when they used to have their 742s operating into Heathrow. Iberia are also gonna use some of their A340s on the Heathrow route this summer
