Singapore Airlines - Nonrev Dress Code?

Thu Apr 08, 2004 10:48 pm

Hi all,

Would be grateful if someone from SQ could advise SQ's dress code for non-rev passengers, with examples of what's acceptable and what's not. Are jeans OK?

Bottom line is....if you aren't sure what to wear, just go business casual. A pair of slacks and a polo or dress shirt.

A suit couldn't hurt either.

I have no direct experience non-reving with SQ, but if SQ is like many other airlines, then jeans may be ok in economy but are NOT acceptable for non-rev passengers in business or first class. As a general rule, I would recommend dressing a bit nicer than average--no need to wear a suit, but just avoid jeans, shorts, and sneakers. Khakis are just as comfortable (arguably more so) as jeans when sitting on a plane, and dressing a little nicer at check-in certainly won't hurt your chances of an upgrade (or getting on the plane at all).

If you fly monkey class it doesn't matter what you wear really... but SQ is quite picky about their business class for nonrev passangers. I flew SIN-FRA and I got upgraded to C but they almost turned me down because of my rather dirty shoes! They were just normal brown shoes no trainers or nothing but they were bit dirty because of the rain... (I wore pair of slacks and a shirt) finally the nicer gate officer let me go in... I might have gave her few nice words but anyway got in  Smile

If you are on an nonrev ticket that is upgradeable on a space available basis, then you should at the very least go business casual - khakis and a longsleeved collared shirt that has been recently ironed at the minimum. A jacket would not hurt either. If you are not on an upgradeable ticket then I wouldn't worry too much, as your only chance of getting upgraded is if Y is full.

Thanks guys - I am an experienced non-revver but our company's dress policy is.. shall we say.. casually enforced!!

My ticket isn't upgradeable - SQ was kind enough to give me an ID100 so I'll definitely settle for that!! Thanks again.  Smile

Hi

Sorry jeans are not acceptable for non-rev on SQ even in economy class. SQ lays out very strict rules, as they do with everything, on the dress code.

To quote from their Manual:

Male: Shirt and pants. Coat and tie optional.

NOT ACCEPTABLE: Track suits, Jeans, Shorts, Tights, Singlets, T-Shirts, Sweat-Shirts, Slippers and Sandals.

Can't speak for our New Zealand staff but check-in here in Singapore with jeans and you will not travel.

Also sorry to say we are extremely tight fisted with our upgrades even with our own staff. Many times I have left behind countless SIA staff whilst departing with unoccupied First and Business Class seats.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for the warning, Ejazz. I'll be sure to be immaculate  Big grin

Can someone also advise if the Hotel Intercontinental in Singapore is a good choice?

I used to ask unimmaculate upgradeable nonrevs to change out of their unimmaculate togs, but I never denied carriage to unimmaculate nonrevs, not even the ugly ones. I suspect most station managers will be the same, though the odd one or two may require you to have botox injections on the spot before you are allowed to board.

As a current SQ employee, I can assure you the dress code for nonrev in no jeans. In addition, in SIN, if your ticket can't be upgraded, you won't get into first or business. You might have better luck at an outstation, but there are some pretty tight controls, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

The Inter Con is a very nice hotel. One good thing about SIN is there are plenty of 5 star hotels.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the answers guys.

I feel here I should point out I have no interest in getting upgraded (I need to experience SQ's Y class IFE for something I'm doing) but the help with the dress code has been great!

nonrev = no revenue for the airline, airline employee of either that airline or another who are flying deeply discounted and or free. Also boarding is based on seats being available, it is stand by travel.

Aerorob - I'm actually flying out of BNE - I'll be in SIN around the 15-17th, then heading onto BKK and then back to AKL via SIN. So that means I'll get the 772, 773, and 744, if all goes according to plan.

As for the purpose of my mission - no comment  Smile

I think you'll only get Audio Video on Demand on the return SIN-AKL sector. for BNE-SIN and SIN-BKK there's only a 50-50 chance you'll get AVOD.

And Mr Perry you must at least give me a ring when you come to SIN. I'll message you my contact number on ICQ!

While I don't know Singapore, I do know the Intercontinental Hotels(considering the fact that PAA used to own them). Never been in one that wasn't first rate. Have a good time!

Too casual almost got me denied a flight on American with an ID75, SAA has a strict dress code and I didn't even think about the dress code on AA till I was at the gate at JFK, on standby to LHR, the gate ladies took me aside and told me I couldn't board dressed as I was (khakis and a white t shirt). One said to me "SAA has a dress code don't they? So do we". I had better clothes in my suitcase but it was already on board so they made me put on my windbreaker and zip it up and told me to keep it on till airborne.

Do the onboard cabin crew know who are non-rev pax?

After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

The inflight crew must know where the non-revs are if for no other reason than when it comes to meal time. Yes, there really are flights that still have a meal service and if there is one, the non-revs get the last choice of entrees if necessary.
