A330-300 Vs A340-300?

Fri Apr 09, 2004 11:41 pm

Hi all,

I am a new member and of course I am sure my topics have already been discussed before and sorry for that.
I am not gonna dare to put the topic on B777 vs A340, but I would like to know why the A330 is said a great a/c in comparison with the A340 ?
I thought that they were very similar, while the A340 is targeted for long haul, the A330 is more suitable for medium haul... That is correct for the A340-500 and the A330-200, but what about the A340-300 and A330-300 ? Why some airliners such as NWA/CX have chosen the A330-300 while some others the A340-300 such as Swiss/LH.
Thanks for your opinion on this !

A vs A!!! Love it!

I believe the choice depends on the mix of ranges for a particular carrier. CX and NWA use them for shorter hops on average?

I much prefer the A340-300 to an A330-300. The 4 engines look great.

Also AC operate A333s and A343s.

In general CX use their A333s on regional trunk routes, and their A343s on thin-long-haul flights. AC initially bought their A333s for European services and A343s for Asian services, but currently both types are used on both markets.

I think the A343 looks better that the A333, but the A332 is better looking than the A342.

CX use their A340s and A330s on short, medium and long haul routes. I always feel cheated when a A330 is put on a 5 hour plus route, rather than a A340 or 777.
As for A vs. B, the A340-600 knocks the 777-300 for six!

The 333 weighs 8 tons less than the 343, but to me, the 343 looks a lot better with those 4 engines.

The A330 and the A340 are the same exact fuselage, in varying lengths. The only difference is the number of engines. A340 is marketted for those airlines that want to have 4 engines (long and ultra long haul) where the route is so long that you don't want to have to be worrying about ETOPS requirements (Europe or US to Africa for example)etc. The A330 is meant for medium to long haul routes where the distances are not so great that you need to worry about "only" having 2 engines (between US and Europe for instance)

Hate to break this to you... but the overwhelming majority of the longest scheduled flights currently being operated are typically well within ETOPS120... let alone 180/207 or anything worth "worrying" about  Yeah sure

I like the 340 but I think the 330 is much more of a looker!

333s in USAirways and NWA colours look mean!

I don't like the RR engine cowlings on the 333 though  Sad

Also the A330 and A340 share the same wings, so the only difference is really the engines.
The normal operations ranges of these aircraft are:

A332: 6650 nm
A333: 5600 nm
A342: 8000 nm
A343: 7300 nm

So, as mentioned above, the A330 is suited also for long haul (Europe to west-coast USA e.g.), and many airlines use it for long hauls (LH, NW, CX, etc).
I think the reason why it's often used for medium routes is the high amount of passengers it carries and the low costs/seat/mile on those routes in comparison to other aircraft. Many charter airlines use the A330 on such routes.
Btw, LH also uses the A343 on medium routes to the middle east for example.
ETOPS, as already said, is probably a huge factor for airlines to use "4 engines 4 long haul", but then, the 772 flies on ultra long hauls...
Maybe also the fact that 2 engines are cheaper in maintenance than 4 engines may convince airlines to use the A330 instead of the A340...
Why is 10 afraid of 7? Because 7 8 9.

A342: 8000 nm

As I so love to mention each time afforded the opportunity---

No A342 in commercial service has anywhere near this amount of range.  Big grin

well as i love to point out if anyoe did want an A340-8000, airbus would build it, but as the plane is so small economics arent great unlike the on the A345

True, only JNB-PER operated by SAA A342s is the only regular one i can think of, but as we all know some airlines such as Iberia and Virgin have a policy of 4 engines for long range, or at least they claim they do.
