Southwest Management In PHL

The station manager for PHL is, interestlingly enough, an ex-USAirways employee. He was previously the station manager for Southwest in Oakland (a MEGA station per Southwest's classification).

Anyone else think this is interesting?


Also, just FYI, they are opening this station with a full provisioning base (never been done for a new city opening before) and rumor has it that they will have more Employees than any other station has opened with since Chicago-Midway (and that was an overnight takeover of Midway's (Version 1) service).

Don't worry about WN in PHL as soon as the delays start and costs rise they will be second guessing themselves on why they chose PHL instead of ABE. Their on-time preformance will drop like a rock in water, yeah you may leave the gate on-time but that hour and a half hold on the runway is gonna kill ya, and when they try to reacommadate their passengers....oh yeah I forgot they dont do that, anyway I was gonna say I know of no other airline that will accept their tickets, so good luck if you fly them.

Hardly impartial thoughts. I do not work for WN, as a matter of fact, I typically only fly them when they offer a non-stop to my destination.

I do assume that you work for USAirways (because your profile is vague). Correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, are you saying that the 1.5hr delays that you mention are something that the USAirways customers routinely experience??? If so, how will WN be any worse off then US? From what I've seen, it appears that WN is scheduling their flights largely outside of US banked hours. Furthermore, US (if you read your company news) says they are going to a de-peaked operation in PHL, which can only help both WN and US in their on-time performance.

Yes, WN doesn't interline tickets, but their frequent flights typically make up for any major disruption in schedule.

Again, I do not work for WN, I just fly them. I also fly other airlines and fly them enough to earn Elite status, so my loyalties are not solely tied to WN.

Why would you find this so interesting, what some kind of conspiracy theory?

I worked for John at LAX when he was the MRO and found him to be one of the nicest people I have ever worked for at Southwest. He is fair and straight forward, tells you when you did good and if you did bad, in other words he is honest with you. I would not hesitate to work for him again if the chance presented itself. I know a number of people who will be working for him at PHL and have told them all that they will like working for him.

So bottom line is, he got the position because he deserves it and has earned it.

When USAirways goes out of business, PHL won't be congested, i.e. delays, anymore. As for taking others tickets.... there's some caution to be said about purchasing tickets for future travel on US. I guarantee you won't see airlines clamoring to take those tickets......

I believe BNAtraveler is saying they took a very experienced man and placed them into PHL. This does sound strange to me. Why wouldn't they keep him in a mega-station and put someone a little less experienced in a new station? After all, a station with lets say 100 flights a day needs a manager with more experience than a station with 15 flights, or however many WN will have in PHL, doesn't it. Is this a sign will that PHL will become a mega-station for WN? Or do they want an experienced man in PHL to start things off on the right foot.

The only thing that gets me is why would they build a mega-station in PHL when they control almost half of all movements at BWI? That's only an hour or two drive from the "City That Loves You Back". If WN does go big in PHL, its a bit like US Airways at PHL and PIT, don't you think? It will be interesting to see how things play out in PHL.

They are required by law to accept those tickets now, if the USair indeed liquidates. I believe that came as part of the package when the 911 grants were passed (not the loans, the grants. Everyone got the grants.). Whether there is any room in the planes for those poor folk..... well, that is another story. They may have their travel plans severly disrupted.

As to PHL being so close to BWI, there are many large WN stations close to one another in the LA basin. Phoenix and Las Vegas are also pretty close. The traffic between Baltimore and Phillidelphia cities makes them farther away in terms of travel time than one would think. This has been discussed many times before in other threads.

There is no caution about purchasing tickets on US, Where are you getting your info?? sounds like a opinion to me, or maybe you just are not fond of US, well thats O.K. Travel agents must provide all options to people wanting to travel, they can not suggest that someone not fly US, DL , UA or whoever because of the situation each is in, they must remain neutral concerning opinions about airlines. I had a friend of mine whos wife got canned from a travel agency for constantly telling clients that AA was a horrible airline and that she wouldnt fly them because the flights were always late, schedule was horrible, ect. So I seriously doubt that travel agents are stearing people from US or DL because of what rumors are going around.
