Pilots: How Insulting Is The "bus Driver" Commet?

Sat Apr 10, 2004 9:47 am

I'm not a pilot, but I figure is I were called that, I'd be a bit pissed. With some seats getting as cheap as riding a train, nobody is calling airliners 'air trains' but with lower and lower cost fares, it may get worse. Soon they'll call you guys 'air taxi drivers.'

The meaning of life is curiosity; we were put on this planet to explore opportunities.

It doesn't really get to me...the people who say that just don't understand and you can't make them understand. Just shrug it off and move on.

If I heard that I would just say "sir please sit your ass in your seat, even if I'm the driver I get paid more and have the best seat in the house, and thanks for flying xxx airlines!"

But really if I were a level headed pilot I would just say "Well sir, this driver hopes to leave on time so please take your seat"

I refer to myself as a bus driver all the time (I fly an Airbus). So what?

I'm not so pompous to think that I should be in any way insulted by that comment. If anything, people in this profession need more humbility than nobility.

Besides, if anything, real bus drivers earn a hard living, and they should be respected as much as any other professional. If I find myself insulted to be called a bus driver, I'd be insulting them.

I wonder who was the mind behind calling them "airbuses". Really stupid name indeed. Why not go a little further and call them cattlecars?

Doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I often say I drive an 18wheeler (-400). Last thing I really want to do when I meet someone is tell them I'm a -400 Captain.

Among other pilots, it's common. If a non-pilot says that, they're just ignorant.TC

You are aware even pilots have to deal with irated passengers, help the boarding if necessary, and whatever other tasks..... After you have been on a real job, "bus driver" doesn't seem that bad.

If you've been a test pilot all your life, driving a mere 727 with a bunch of tourists maybe off putting.

But if anybody were to refer to me as an overpaid bus driver, I'd invite them to ride jumpseat while landing during a heavy thunderstorm.

But that's just me.

"Bus Driver" is an accurate term. With airfare so inexpensive, you now haul much of the same type of folks... just look at the A/C when everyone deplanes... garbage, peanuts, and crap laying everywhere. Bus, taxi, or airplane... its almost the same in today's society - sad but true.

What separates us from them is the pilots... they are the elite! Oh - another difference... when the cab or bus is traveling at speed, the passenger is anywhere from three to six feet from the ground... In an aircraft - many thousands of feet!

I'm a pilot but by no means anywhere near ATP status, but among the pilots we use some variation on the term "drive" often. If a non-pilot or someone "on the outside" uses that term, it all depends on the context they use it in. If they use it in a derogatory manner, even if talking to me the "Cessna 152 driver", I just kindly remind them that the pilot in command is the final authority as to the safe operation of the aircraft, a big responsibility. As I've stated already, I'm nowhere near the level of the big riggers around here (<--there I go again  Big grin ), but that's just where I come from on the issue. Plenty of morons in the world, the worst thing you can do to yourself is get hellbent over them. Life isn't worth that, so why do people get so wound up?

I'm a paramedic. Calling a paramedic an "ambulance driver" is considered a minor insult. Ambulance drivers were the guys dressed in spiffy white uniforms that tooled around in Cadillac hearses in the 1950's and 1960's. Their primary role was to throw you on a stretcher and drive to the hospitalas fast as they could...no care or treatment at all.

I frequently find that people who call pilots "Bus Drivers" do it just to see if they can get a rise (or reaction) out of the pilot. I learned to ignore these types years ago as most have advised in this thread.

Actually being called a bus driver could be considered a badge of honor. I refer to the brave souls who drive public buses in Isreal.

When I tell some people my dream is to be an airline pilot and those who respond with the "bus driver" comment, I have found that those people themselves have not made very much with their lives anyway, so maybe they just want to make themselves feel better...either way, I don't even bother trying to explain to them...not worth the effort. Just smile and nod. If they can't see that if an airline pilot makes a mistake he will make world news, then they must not have much of a head on their shoulders anyway.

I fully agree...Who cares what anyone else says? I could care less if someone insulted me in any way if i was flying commercial airliners, i'd just be happy to be flying a plane period, regardless of what anyone says or thinks.

If I were a pilot, people could call me whatever they wanted. I'd still be flying the plane. Good enough for me.

An old colleague of mine once (years ago) jumpseated on Iberia. He was surprised to find two female pilots. Not surprised in a bad way, but simply because it struck him that they had not been making any announcements.

Him: "Why don't you do the announcements."
Pilot: "Well, some people get nervous with a woman pilot."
Him: "But don't you find that a bit discriminatory and offensive towards you?"
Pilot (smiling): "I could get annoyed about that kind of stuff, but I get to fly the plane. And that keeps me really happy. So why should I complain? They can think what they like."

How do you think it makes bus drivers feel when their profession is used in comparison with pilots in a very disparaging way?

What is wrong with a bus driver? Why would a pilot care if someone said that? It's funny how people here think that everyone cares so much about aviation like all of us nuts. Most people don't even care at all who the pilot is or what kind of plane it is, to most getting on a plane is like getting on a bus, your stuck in a small seat with lots of people around, SAME THING! The men and women that fly the planes are very talented people that are trained very well to do the same thing over and over, as are bus drivers. If you are trying to say that pilots are better than bus drivers you have a serious problem and you should try to help yourself get better, people are no better than anyone else just because of what they have decided to do with their professional life, you need to look at what they do to help other people when they are not being paid for it and that is where you find out if one person is better than another............

I am asked that by marines all the time. "what do you plan to do". "I want to fly for an airline sometime, I hope". Then they ALWAYS say join the marines, you dont want to fly those stupid things. It would be like flying a bus. I want to, everytime, SO badly, to just come back and unsult them. But I refraine.
