Pilot/Controler Fight On Radio

Sat Apr 10, 2004 3:13 pm

Has ATC ever really pissed you off? I was listening to ATC once and heard a pilot and Controller (ORD) arguing with each other over something then it ended when the Controller said to the pilot

"Get off our taxiway! We'll keep you in mind when you're trying to leave!"

Is this common? What might a pilot be fighting with the controller about at ORD or elsewhere?

its common to have disagreements but not to actually verbalize it. a lot of pilots and atc will say things like "well that's not what our chart shows but okay, wilco." Perhaps what you heard was simply sarcasm? A lot of controllers know pilots well from years of flying and joke a bit on ground control freqs...

ground control can get a bit political as far as who you push back first or who's gate you block, etc.... this is often a issue that creates some attitude.

The controller is the one that controls your sequence in or out of the airport, so getting in a fight with a controller whilst in the air might get you to practise some holding pattern procedures. I personnally haven't heard a controller get in a verbal fight with a pilot. I can recall a few times when the controller got mad at me, but I apologized and it turned out ok.

FYI: These guys were definitely not "old chums", they were certainly quite upset at each other for some reason!
