VS To Codeshare With AF

Sat Apr 10, 2004 7:33 pm

There's a topic headline I never expected to see, but posted this morning by a VS staffer on the VirginFlyer website...

Since VS must 'use or lose' the LHR slots they recently acquired, and only one set of slots is being used for the US expansion plans, they have cut a special deal with AF to run a codeshare to Lyon for a year. VS get 10% of the seat allocation, and I'm assuming this will be on AF metal.

Because this is only a temporary arrangement, and they have limited seats, this will only be sold & advertised on the VS website.

Flight numbers will be;

LHR-LYS: VS9903,VS9905,VS9909
LYS-LHR: VS9902,VS9904,VS9908

Despite Branson's incessant ranting re: going it alone, as well as the SQ stake...

...if you'll consider that VS now cooperates with DL/AF/CO, and SkyTeam's relatively extreme weakness at LHR--- would make for interesting synergy should they snatch VS.

I doubt this is the sign of anything more permanent, just a marriage of convenience so VS don't lose the LHR slots they've just bought. If VS were to ever get into bed with an alliance (still seems unlikely, IMHO), it would be *A rather than SkyTeam, surely?

...legislators might frown upon two Star members based at LHR, but who knows.

BMI and Virgin aren't really competing with each other though. They already have codeshares, so it might not be far-fetched.

Many strongly-competing airlines codeshare with each other:

AA & BA

DL & NW & CO

etc
