How Confused Is This Guy?

Sun Apr 11, 2004 4:20 am

Couldn't help but laugh when I read this "trip report"

http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/cityguide_travel/travel/china_airlines/_review/407288/

The first paragraph reads as follows:

despite its name, China Airlines is the airline of taiwan not china. in some countries it is called Mandarin Airlines.

This pretty much sets the scene for the rest of the review!

 Laugh out loud

China Airlines in some countries is known as Mandarin Airlines -- have a look at when Mandarin was formed, why it was formed, and most importantly look at the ownership. Although Sydney and Vancouver routes have now been handed over to the parent company (CI) -- Mandarin is now a quasi-China Airlines operation -- operating to the low-yield "holiday" destinations.

Seems to me the guy was spot on that part. Obviously shows that he has a bit more knowledge of the airline industry than those who laugh at him.

And nothing wrong with his 'review' -- normal people don't want to read every conceivable detail about a flight. I could give a rat's about what movie was showing, or whether the pilot came over on the intercom 30 seconds too late to annouce 'landing'.

in some countries it is called Mandarin Airlines.

Some, particularly in government, have begin to refer to CI (as a whole) as "Formosa Airlines".... in accord with the subsidiary merged into the Mandarin subsidiary in 1999.

Doesn't sound to me as though he was trying to do a "trip report", just a review of his experience of flying with China Airlines...can't see anything wrong with that...jeez, give the guy a break.

Hey Noel,

Mandarian IS another name for China Airlines. It was formed so they could fly into China and not offend the government of that country. Many carriers did that because they wanted to go to both Taipei and Peiking without getting the local knickers in a knot. Stupid but true.
