Type Certificate Suspension

Mon Apr 12, 2004 4:40 am

I was wondering if anyone knows where I could find out which transport category aircraft have ever had their type certificates lifted or suspended? I know the FAA suspended the DC-10's for a while in 1979 after the Chicago accident; but I can't seem to find a consistent answer as to whether or not that was the first time that happened to a major aircraft like that. Any ideas?

The DC-10 is by no means the only aircraft to ever have it's airworthiness certification revoked.

I don't know if ALL of these aircraft were ever "officially" suspended from flying ops, but they were all grounded after accidents/incidents:

Fokker F-10A
Lockheed Model 14 Zephyr
Lockheed Constellation
Douglas DC-6
Martin 202
Avro Tudor
He Havilland Comet
Concorde
and of course the DC-10.

Gordon.

What exactly happens when a plane has its type certificate suspended--is the fleet grounded until the certificate is renewed?

Just speaking of the DC-10. The grounding only applied to GE powered DC-10s. Northwest's DC-10-40s were not affected.

I read somewhere that when the DC-10s were grounded during the summer of 1979, it really hurt McDonnell Douglas. Was that grounding a major factor in MD's eventual dissolution?
