Kudos To HMY Airways!

Tue Apr 13, 2004 1:19 am

HMY Airways donated more than $50,000 in airline travel for terminally and critivcally ill children and their families to travel from Canada to Disneyland in California. HMY Airways is a Gold sponsor of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Canada. Their efforts will enable many children to see their wishes and dreams come true.

Way to go, HMY staff and Dr. Ho!

Hi,
I just caught this topic. YES, indeed HMY Airways is Gold Sponsor to the Make A Wish Foundation Canada. Since Janurary 2004, HMY Airways has been donating between CA$1 to CA$5 per ticket (depending routing and fares level) to the Foundation. That means every time you fly with HMY Airways, you are helping a great charity for children.
It is not just children in BC that would benefit, but all across Canada. The Foundation's chapter in Ontario can norminate a child, and use the credit amount to fly the child and his family on HMY Airways from YYZ to YVR then to LAX or even just to YVR (e.g. attend a NHL Playoff game !!). The credit amount can apply any where HMY Airways flys. The Foundation will make selection and advice HQ where and when, and all tickets are positive confirm space. The child will also receive a small gift from HQ onboard.
A great move indeed.
Now let's look at what you receive when you take a trip YYZ/YVR on HMY Airways, and compare it with others like Jetsgo, Westjet or even Air Canada. At the same prices CA$169.00 one way -
1. You are contributing to a great charity.
2. If you book it with your travel agency, they receive 5-10% commission. A good way to support your local business. Not that many airlines now pay such high commission.
3. Once onboard, you will receive a hot meal service with wine, movie and music, plus the great attention service from the cabin crew. (look at http://www.airlinemeals.net/indexMeals.html and click HMY Airways then find out what is being served. You will be surprised). Any meals on Westjert or Jetsgo ??
4. A safe and faster flight on HQ's B757. (B757 are faster than MD-80 and B737, normally a YYZ/YVR flight HQ save you about 10 minutes).
I firmly believe HQ is the most friendly and social responsible airline, it should be the airline by choice. I hope many of you could fly HQ next time.

This a a good and yes, socially responsible move from HMY. Howewer, the formula has been used for years by AC employees with "Dream Take Flight", the company donating one (or two from YYZ) a/c for a day at Disney. More recently, we had the A319 painted in"Horizons Enfance" scheme with AC providing free transportation for sick children (and huge discounts for close family members) away from large centers. So this wouldn't be a first.

I'm glad we now have 2 very socially respomsible airlines in Canada that cares for their communities. Now, If one of them could only get it fixed...

Astral,
I'm hoping on flying to Hawaii this summer. What do you think the chances of a standby passenger (interline through WJ) like me getting on? What's the best day of the week for me to leave? Good on you guys for helping the Make-a-wish foundation.

I got my annual report from Westjet yesterday, and there's a section (oddly enough) titled "Westjet lends a helping hand". I couldn't believe the amount of donations we made to charitable organizations, foundations, etc. We'll also be adding meals for purchase on our long-haul flights soon. Nothing free or too fancy, but there nonetheless. Our commission for travel agents (also in the annual report) was 8%, again, something I didn't know.
EH.

hmm...ok, here's a contrary view.

what HMY is doing is demanding that I (as a paying customer) donate $1 to a charity I may not support. I would rather have the freedom as a customer to pay a lower fare and then donate the extra cash to a charity of my choice.

all HMY is doing is removing $50K in potential charitable donations from HMY customers by making them pay higher fares to fund HMY's favourite charity. Hence this is not "new" charitable money.

I'm not being a scrooge....I just firmly believe that companies should not be involved in philanthropy...this should be left to individuals.

if anyone disagrees....fine. but any personal attacks on me......think again. cheers

LOL! Good one Neil! You never resort to personal attacks, do you?  Big thumbs up

And I will disagree with you. While these corporate donations are so minimal in the grand scheme of things, they really do make a huge difference to the charities involved, and more importantly, their beneficiaries. I could understand your argument if HMY were charging $50 more than the average ticket, and those $50 were going directly to the charity. But $1 from your ticket? Let's face it. If they decreased the ticket prices by $1, you wouldn't notice any difference, and ticket sales would not change at all. But the money that the charities receive as a result makes a huge difference. That's what makes this such a great thing.

Keep up the good work HMY. And remember, the more normal people that will see what great things you do in the community, the more they will want to use your services. I know I feel good about supporting a company that not only provides a great service, but also cares about its employees and the community they do business in.  Smile

Ive heard quite a bit recently, and seen it in print Nuno. How were those accounting contacts I gave you to help you in your career by the way?

And I will disagree with you. While these corporate donations are so minimal in the grand scheme of things,

They are not minimal. They are often a significant expense and represent not the best use of corporate donations, but merely the most aggressive charity who gets the ear of the CEO. I've seen it many times.

The average Cdn donates 1-2% of their disposable income to charity -- you can be damn sure this would be higher if services were priced lower so as not to cover corporate donations.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here. But if you're suggesting I've ever disrespected you or personally attacked you, then you're way off Neil, and I find that a little disturbing.

How were those accounting contacts I gave you to help you in your career by the way?

Neil, that was definitely greatly appreciated. At the time I was generally thinking of straying from the flying, and focussing on the accounting. But my heart told me otherwise, and yes it is true, that passion makes people do foolish things. I was very interested at the time in pursuing the accounting and start looking for serious work in the field, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. It was still a highly appreciated gesture, and something I would do myself to a friend in need.

And by the way, $1 from each ticket is still very minor to the consumer, but makes a big difference to the charities.  Big grin It also helps with tax write-offs.

Well, from a transportation standpoint Nuno, the only firms that are hiring are on the cargo side, and particularly LTL trucking. You could focus on that. Any acctg jobs at those companies I gave you would be thru attrition/job churn.

Ive heard quite a bit recently, and seen it in print Nuno.

I'm talking about corporate donations! I read a few articles years ago that corporate donations result in less total donation dollars than if corporations eliminated their donation budgets and staff and reduced prices accordingly. The BEST social service that ANY business can provide is to make money and hire people.

But if you're suggesting I've ever disrespected you or personally attacked you, then you're way off Neil,

Huh? Where did that come from? What's up? Ohhh...I think you misread my earlier comment for some reason.

this was not aimed at you Nuno (why would it be?). I just dont want people jumping all over me for opposing company philanthropy. While nice on the surface, with the multiplier effect I believe it will reduce overall donations to charities.

In no way do I think this is not a good charity.

Yyz717,

HMY is not making their passengers pay higher fares. They are simpky taking some of their profits off their all ready low fares and donating that money. If they did raise their fares then I can see your point. If I had to fly from YVR-YYZ I would chose HMY over anyone else, the fares are as low or lower than westjet and jetsgo, you get a hot meal, music and movies, and see the the airline is giving back to the communities it serves.

I would prefer that they lower their fares and let me decide where to donate my own money.

Although I also think it's a very nice charity option, I see efforts like this also in a bit a cynical way. Being upset about $1 spent to charity on each ticket is of no use, don't forget many (other) airlines spend even about $10 a ticket on advertisements and PR where noone benefits (except sometimes overpaid obnoxious people in advertisement businesses) , and sponsering this charity might, I repeat MIGHT just be the cheaper and more effective option to get your brand well known and attract more people to your service. An airline is there to make money and if they can do that by doing good deeds, that's all the better.

Hi Canada EH and Everyone,
Sorry I missed many of your comments as I was away in YYZ doing my part of work for HMY.
The chances of getting standby to HNL is not good at all, worse for OGG. The load factor so far is already in the high 30%, when the time June comes closer, it could be difficult. But you never know !! standby is standby, you try your luck. On behalf of HMY, wecome you onboard if you can make it. HMY Do offers from time to time 'Friends & Family' fares (remember CP time ??), but usually during low season, so HNL and OGG may not be on the list. I remember during Janurary to YYZ it was at CA$99.00 return plus tax !!! on certain dates.
For charity donation, I must stress again HMY didn't raise their fares at all. Simply they are taking their revenue to do a good course. HMY whole idea was to involve everyone, not just put money out from the Airline or just from its employees. HMY itself has made numerous contributions, and its employees are involved in the Canuck Place, the coming 24 Hours Relay, and United Way. HARMONY is HMY's corporate objective, and they believe it is the best way to involve everyone. Choosing Make-A-Wish Foundation was no easy choice, senior executives looked at manay many charity, and finally settled with the Foundation. You may all be interested to know that Jackie Chan, HMY's Honourary Captain after knowing the choice, also voiced his strong support. He may take part in a Foundation function when he comes to Canada later this year.
I can asure you all HMY Airways is different. It corporate objective stays firmly in mutual benifit, cooperation, and a win win approach that other party win first.
There are more exciting news to announce shortly, and I will keep you all informed.
