Taiwan's EVA Air To Buy 15 Boeing Aircraft

Taiwan's EVA Air to buy 15 Boeing aircraft -paper

TAIPEI, April 13 (Reuters) - EVA Airways (Taiwan:2618.TW - News), Taiwan's second-largest carrier, will buy 15 passenger aircraft from Boeing Co (NYSE:BA - News) worth around US$3 billion, a local newspaper said on Tuesday.

The Chinese language Economic Daily News quoted an unidentified industry source as saying EVA would buy seven Boeing aircraft, including three 777-200LRs and four 777-300ERs, with options for eight more.

The paper quoted the source as saying EVA should sign the contract with Boeing no later than the end of April. However, the paper said EVA declined to confirm or comment on the report.

EVA officials were not immediately available for comment.

On Monday, EVA shares jumped 4.79 percent to close at T$17.50, outperforming a 2.38 percent rise in the main TAIEX (Taiwan:^TWII - News) index. (US$1=T$32.9)

Is anyone else confused?  Confused Is EVA ordering another batch of 777s or is this old news? If I remember correctly, their last order was 3 772LRs, 4 773ERs, and an option for 8 more.

OK, so after reading the original text in Chinese on the Economic Daily News, there has been a slight confusion.

Apparently, EVA Air ANNOUNCED its order for 3 772LRs and 4 773ER in 2000. Now, they will be signing the contract for the purchase of the same aircraft ordered in 2000. EVA Air will most likely exercise its options for the 8 other 777s, bringing the total order to 15 aircraft.

EVA Air is planning to use the 777NGs to replace its 744s. The 744s will eventually be converted into freighter aircraft.

It is very good to hear for EVA Air to buy with 15 of B777 aircraft and would able make extra long range flight.

I think that initially the 747-400 Combis would be replaced by B 777-200ER/LRs and those 744Ms will be converted into freighters.

Then years later the B 744 will see the same fate and be replaced by the B 773ER but then again there is a 50-70 seater seat shortage between EVAs B 744 and B 773ERs!!! Whats gonna happen to this difference???

100% the B 777-200LRs would be used for nonstop :

1. TPE-EWR flights(currently via SEA)
2. TPE-LHR flights (currently via BKK)
3. And maybe TPE-CDG + AMS (currently via BKK) nonstops.

Behramjee

FYI, BR is currently flying to Europe via BKK is not because of range issues. In fact if they were to do nonstop to say LHR, it is actually closer than say KUL or SIN to LHR. BKK-LHR is only slightly shorter than TPE-LHR on more direct routings via commonly used airways.

But BR is flying via mainly because they do not have rights to fly over the PRC's airspace and also they have 5th freedom rights to EU ex-BKK.

So with B772LRs or not, they can do it nonstop if they could overfly the Chinese airspace.

Again, do not just speak whatever came in your mind. Make sure you are right and make statements that are justified.

I know very well why BR fly via BKK and why so many airlines fly via BKK or SIN to Australia and QF via SIN to Europe etc. Its because of their very liberal open skies policies.

Thanks for clearing up the info concerning overflight rights over China's airspace for BR.

I think the earlier 744s (B-16401 and B-16402; Delivered in 1992) will be the first to be converted into freighters.

EVA Air probably loves to continue its Europe routes through BKK. They pick up many passengers from/to Bangkok.

This is very confusing. I don't believe the 777 were ordered in 2000, or there was some clause in the contract that EVA could get out. Then Airbus started to push with 340 a couple of years ago, but EVA decided to stay with 777. Now I guess they will confirm this order, don't believe in Boeing's eyes it will be more 777 sales, just confirmation on previous order, switch in next week to see the next episode of Soap!!

Clarification is needed. These orders could already be listed on Boeings site.

1: The 3 B772LR & 4 B773ER were original firm orders from 2000. Nothing has ever changed on that order.
2: The 8 others frames could be the 8 B773ER' s listed as Unidentified in 2002 which have long been rumoured to be for EVA.

There is the total of 15 Frames which are all firm and listed on Boeing's website. Perhaps this is final confirmation of the 8 Unidentified B773ER ordered in 2002.

My memory may not serve me correctly here so correct me if I am wrong. We need Hamlet69 or Flying-Tiger to define this orders history better

That Yahoo news above has been updated and it states that the 8 "options" have been "firmed-up" by EVA (8 777-300ERs).

The news in Taiwan:

EVA AIR did not prove the dealing. However, according to the news, EVA AIR will buy two types of B777. Totally is 15 planes. Next year Boeing will give two to BR .

The order is from four years ago. The total order should be three B777-200LR, four B777-300ER and eight optional.

EVA AIR will replace B747-400 to B777. BR's B747-400 are used more than 10 years. About the engine, they will still use "GE".

B777-200LR have 250 seats and can fly 15000 KM. They will use them in EWR, CDG, LHR routes which are long range. B777-300ER have 310 seats and can fly 10000 KM. They will use them in US West Coast, Oceanic and Asia routes which have more passengers.

For Boeing, the Taiwan Market is not large. However, they tried hard to get the order from CI and BR. However, CI has less interesting in B777. CI finally orderd A330 and A340. It means that Boeing loss the market in Taiwan. Now, BR will order B777 from Boeing. It is a good news for Boeing in Taiwan Market.

@Airbus lover
Actually you are not exactly correct! They can fly from Taiwan to Europe without going over PRC. CI now does a flight over Siberia to Frankfurt.
Airlines choose to fly to Europe via Bangkok as you said because they can pick up primarily European tourist traveling to Thailand for Holidays, etc.

But I think it is terrific to see BR picking up 777 just to show later how it is a mistake for CI to go with the 340.

...but believe it or not, the route being most closely eyed for the 772LRETs is TPE-PTY  Wow!

Sure? From TPE-PTY? I think not. EVA AIR had TPE-LAX-PTY route some years ago. However, they stopped the route...I surely hope if they open TPE-PTY route but I think it may not happen due to the economic reason.

EVA AIR earn 1.4 billion last year. It is the highest record. BR will receive another A330-200 next Thrusday.

I think not.

You know not

EVA AIR had TPE-LAX-PTY route some years ago. However, they stopped the route...I surely hope if they open TPE-PTY route but I think it may not happen due to the economic reason.

Among the reasons for this route being considered is the indirect subsidization in talks to be provided by the Evergreen Group itself... who is by far the largest external investment organization in that country.

From the concren information, EVA AIR will not have this route at this time and also may not have it in the future. It is not enough for they to support this route. Also, it may be involved in the political reason.

Eva Air announced an order for 777s already 3 years ago to replace their 744 fleet until the end of this decade.

I don't think EVA will even have enough 772LRs to operate all those routes. After confirming the "new" order, EVA will have 3 772LRs and 12 773ERs on order. I think the 773ERs can make the TPE-CDG run. The 744 does it beautifully now.

If I'm lucky, I'll start seeing the 773ERs on the LAX flights next year.

Range of the B772LR is more than 15000km, at least the projected range.

The B773ER has published still air range of around 13000km depending on airline config.

IINM, BR ordered their aircraft tanked and at max available TOW... meaning the range is 17,170km plus.

I wonder how the 777s will be configured. Does anyone know?

I know First Class will be eliminated, so it will probably be a 3-class aircraft (Premium Laurel, Evergreen Deluxe, and Economy)

Premium Laurel will probably be 2-2-2.
Economy will either be 2-5-2 or 3-3-3.

Will Evergreen Deluxe be 2-3-2 (like the MD-11s) or 2-4-2 (like the 744s)?

Will be interesting to see how BR configs their new planes.

I've even heard rumors that say BR might drop Deluxe Class. Personally I believe the only product BR is attracting me (and many others) is their Deluxe class.

Warren, I understand that CI flies over Siberia to FRA but of course this results in longer flight length. But what I was saying is that it is not true that they fly via BKK because of range issues.

Well, its been confirmed on EVA Air's website. They have exercised their 8 additional options. Their current order is for 3 B777-200LRs and 12 B777-300ERs.

Delivery Schedule:
2005 - 2 aircraft
2006 - 2 aircraft
2007 - 4 aircraft
2008 - 5 aircraft
2009 - 2 aircraft

The 777-300ERs will be configured:
42 Premium Laurel Class, 63 Evergreen Deluxe, and 211 Economy

We can expect AVOD in every seat (like the A330) and new seats in every class and possibly a newly improved Premium Laurel Class.

//EDIT//
EVA Air is also now the airline to order the most B777-300ERs.

Direct orders, yes, but EK is going to lease 26 773ERs, and AF is going to lease at least 6 773ERs on top of the 10 773ERs they ordered. So, BR is only no. 3.  Wink/being sarcastic

I apologize for my erroneous information about EVA Air being the airline with the most orders. I guess they won't be the biggest operator. Embarrassment

Interesting side news: EVA Air is going to purchase an additional 2 Airbus A330-200s and are considering A330 freighters. I didn't even know Airbus had freighters for the A330.
