Personally, I like ANA better. Better service, and the flight attendants have always been a dream. But, ANA and JAL are pretty similar to eachother. The both operate the 747-400D, the 777-300, the 777-200, tons of 767s, JAL has lots of 737-400s, ANA (and ANK) has lots of 737-500s and two 737-400s used for quick island hopping flights out of Tokyo and Fukuoka. ANA does fly the A320 and A321. JAL just merged with JAS, and now they have MD
-90s, and A300s.
If you want fleet variety, pick one. Depends on your fancy. If you like classic 747s, fly JAL out of YVR
. If you like 777s and want Star Alliance points, fly ANA. If you want to fly on a supercharged 747 for only about an hour, fly from Haneda to Itami in a 747-400D on either airline.
Everything in Japan is service oriented. The flight attendants will do their best, as opposed to US FA
's who seem to do the bare minimum. Try JAL once and ANA once for yourself. You will either think that they are both pretty gosh darned similar, or that you like one over the other. Either way, you get more service in coach on either carrier over anything that is currently flying stateside.
