Boeing Dumps Lears, 2 604s For Sale

Wed Apr 14, 2004 7:45 am

Well, seems like Boeing really is trying to cut costs now...

Boeing Cutting Its Flight Department

Apparently building corporate jets is OK, but flying on them might not be, according to Boeing’s new CEO, Harry Stonecipher. He is slashing the company flight department because he reportedly remarked that such use is an extravagance. A company spokesman at corporate headquarters in Chicago did not return a call in time for this report. But sources tell AIN Alerts that the aircraft manufacturer has already sold two Learjet 60s, placed two Challenger 604s on the block and “parked” two EC 135 turbine helicopters.

The fate of the company’s flight-department personnel and its own corporate-operated BBJs was unknown at press time. A spokesperson at Boeing Business Jets in Seattle did not deny Stonecipher’s remarks, but emphasized that the company is “committed” to the BBJ program. Boeing continues to see a market for the BBJ, she added. (Aviation International News)

When Boeing moved the HQ to Chicago was Meigs field ever thought of to base these acft at. Did they know Meigs was about to be hijacked by the Mayor. Where were these acft based and was it with the corporate BBJ that I think I heard they had?

604s are N344BA, N345BA and N346BA

LR60s are N8270 and N8271

BBJ is N349BA

Sure they are an "extravagance" but they'll keep the BBJ just the same, eh?

I thought the whole reason Boeing had these is to fly in customers, which makes sense condidering deals are in millions or even billions. Perhaps they will charter corporate jets for this function on a need basis and save money.

The corporate aircraft were based at Gary, IN. Airport. Boeing bought/rented an unused hanger on the field. One Challenger was based at Long Beach (LGB.)

The two EC-135 helicopters were based at LGB and were used for executive transportation throughout Southern California. It's my understanding that both for sale. Fairly new aircraft - less than 18 months old.

I heard the Boeing had more than one BBJ in their own fleet - maybe two/three. Not sure of the exact number.

I guess if I were a big boeing customer I would actually expect them to send me a BBJ. I think I would be dissapointed if they sent a Lear(Even though I love 'em Big grin )

I have lots of friends in LGB that are all(except for a couple) loosing their jobs. All of us in the tower will miss talking to the Helicopter pilots everyday, Its too bad, because they were all very very nice people.

I thought Boeing had the hangar at MDW next to Chicago Express on the south side of the field (closest to 31C/13C). No?

if you think about it, its kind of funny that the BOEING flight department was flying on BOMBARDIER aircraft...

Given the size of Boeing aircraft, it would be difficult to have a flight department made up of only Boeing aircraft.
When I worked for Boeing Wichita, I took a company trip on a Boeing company airplane. The airplane was a Cessna Citation 3, Model 650. At that time Boeing owned/leased about 3 Citation 3s.
When I traveled on commercial airlines on a Boeing trip, I sometimes flew on Airbus aircraft.
I received my PPL in the Boeing Flying Club. They used C172, C182s.

They'll keep N737BZ and N707BZ at least, as they're BBJ demonstrators as well as Boeing's corporate transports.
