EK Incident At Jo,burg

Has anyone got any more information on the EK A340 incident the other night at Jo,burg.
Apparently it hit approach lights on departure and then damaged flaps and gear on the emergency landing back at Jan Smuts Intl. This is what I have heard but would be interested in any more info

I believe with the high altitude and high temp at Joburg. The regular A340 is ill suited for that airport on long hauls. I guess this why SAA is getting the more powerful A340-300E.

I heard similar info and that it was lucky to get airborne at all. There is a seperate post which barely mentions anything (from news reports) but it would appear that this incident may be a lot more serious than was released through the South African media
What I heard was that it hit the approach lights at the departure end, barely stayed in the air but managed to climb out, circled for just over an hour to burn/dump fuel and for damage assessment. It then landed with some tyres already damaged and then blew most of the remaining tyres on landing.
Anyway this is what I heard, from a reliable source who has a contact at Jan Smuts.

Yeah, have heard similar. Apparently she rode the turf for around 150 yards before lifting off, then a stuck-flap problem, circling, dumping and was finally brought back to terra-firma only to have the brakes fail and tyres blow eventually coming to a halt some 100m from the end of the runway.

Thankfully the plane departed from (I think) 21L and had the grass beneath her as 21R and 03L & R all point towards some serious industrial and housing areas.

Supposedly a loading error?

Very serious indeed. Congrats to the crew on what was a top job.

Why was I under the impression that it was a 777-200? I'm not sure.

Speculation was there was 4 tonnes of cargo in the aft cargo that was not figured in the weight and balance. Flex T/O was accomplished and when it was obvious performance was lacking crew selected Full T/O thrust. Flap were damaged and locked in position causing crew to dump fuel and return.

On landing normal brakes failed and crew used alternate brakes to stop 150M past the end of the runway.

Hats off to the EK crew!

Last time I flew EK from Joahnnesburg to Dubai, it was an A330. But they use B777 on this route on certain days as well.

Warren, considering that lot's of airlines regularly operate (or have operated) A343s into Joburg, I doubt that it's really that much of a problem...

Airlines that I know of that have or are operating A343s into Joburg on a regular basis are Lufthansa, Virgin Atlantic, Iberia, Austrian Airlines, Air France, Cathay Pacific, Olympic, Egyptair and, obvious through this incident, Emirates. Air Mauritius also flies it's A340s to Joburg from time to time (not sure how regular this is, but I used to see them at JNB quite often), but I'd say that they probably don't really count because they're not flying off on a long haul from there.

So I guess that the hot/high issue itself probably isn't that bad.

P.S.: Although I must admit that taking off from JNB one quite warm evening on OE-LAK (named "Africa") on Austrian's flight to Vienna (a few years back, when OS still flew to JNB), I was quite happy that the runway in JNB isn't really all that short - although, taking off in a B732 on the way to Bulawayo in the same conditions, I was glad about that length as well...  Big grin

Looks like they should have performed a toga from the begining and not a flex take-off.

Aircraft involved was an A340 A6-ERN

If the cargo was overloaded/miscalculated, then it would have posed serious problems for any type of aircraft. The flight crew certainly earned their pay that night! Hope they get commendations... and who ever messed up the loading (assuming that was what it was) gets cained.

That must be scary, circling around knowing things are broken but not being able to see the extent of the damage... and having to be up there for an hour.

Wonder how the pilot was injured? The plane looked OK. Perhaps it was whiplash or impact from the nose gear striking?

Glad everyone is OK... sounds like a big disaster was avoided.

I thought 21L (if I recall, its been a while !) was the western runway heading north, with the R22 highway just the other side of the hedge. I didn't think there was that much overrun on that runway. And houses just the other side of the highway. I used to work at SAA cargo, and watched t/o from that runway all the time.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't recall 21L being used for departures recently as it is a lengthy taxi to there, usually they use 03L/21R for departures and 03R/21L for landings at busy times.

21L is a nasty runway to go off the end of, it is elevated like flying from an aircraft carrier (as is the other end which has even more residential properties) and if you ran off the end of there it would be nose down and onto one of the busiest highways in the area, with residential on the other side. I have seen nothing on the news about it here but if it is as reported....very, very fortunate outcome.




After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Looks like they should have performed a toga from the begining and not a flex take-off.

Inadequite thrust/speed wasnt a factor. If they wouldnt have had enough speed, then the crew would have applied TO/GA power a lot earlier.

The real problem is that the aircraft didnt rotate when the sidestick was pulled back. This supports the rumors about the aircraft being incorrectly loaded.

I think that it was the first commercial flight with the specific aircraft for Emirates.

I have been doing some asking around and I am amazed at how little information is available about this incident. Just a point about the runway in use, the only runway at JNB with any grass runoff at all is 21R, there is quite a long flat area beyond the runway that would support the statement posted above:

I am surprised that the Airbus publicity machine haven't picked up on this.
