QF SkyBed Vs BA Club World Vs Cathay New Biz Class

Wed Apr 14, 2004 3:45 pm

I have a choice of these 3 oneworld carriers on an upcoming trip. Please could anyone who has actually flown on them outline their preferences and the reasoning behind them. I am very tall (about 6'8") so seat / bed comfort would be more important than service. Thanks!

Hi... I've only flown the CX product (sleeper seat-wise, anyway...), and I found it very comfortable. However ! 1) When the seat is fully down, I believe that the CX seat has the greatest (steepest) slope angle of the 3 airlines, and in truth, I did find myself wedging my feet against the bottom of the seat panels in front of me to keep myself from sliding downwards, and 2) I am not as tall as you, and if that 6'8" is NOT a typo, then you may wind up in a pretty tight curled-up position.

For service, I find CX very hard to beat. Certainly far more consistant than QF and/or BA.

Good luck!

I've not travelled on QF or CX, but probably similar in that I imagine the 'bed' is max of around 6' so a little tight for you! I'm about 5'11" and I really did not like the BA seats, and in particular, the width - I got no sleep on my US UK transatlantic! If I were you, I'd switch to World Traveller Plus, or to an aircraft that still has some of the old cradle seats, which will accept your frame! Others doubtless will have a better knowledge and experience!

Bon voyages!

When I flew BA Club I found them to be very good. Wide enough for me and long enough (I am 5ft10). I have always liked BA and the crew always know how to treat pax.

My partner who has flown with QF & BA said BA is the best (he is 6ft6)...

I would say if you need a long wide bed, BA First or VS Upper.

i am shorter than all of you all at 1.75 and found the BA club world bed to be excruciatingly short!!!!!!!!!!!

i think it is only 6' long...and certain not wide enough. For one thing...you do slope downwards if you are facing the rear of the aircraft and your legs are higher than your head (slightly) if you are facing forwards.

bloody annoying.

haven't flown anything on CX or QF let alone business but i since australia is large perhaps the Skybed would be the best bet.

in any event...for someone of your height I would rather be in BA's World Traveller Plus than Club World....actually maybe if you don't recline the club world bed all the way you might be able to comfortable...either that or if you like to crouch.

if you can catch a ride in First on BA that should be fine...probably also Upper Class on virgin. Otherwise try to get on a BA 763 with the cradle seat...depends on where you are going of course.

if CX BA and QF are your options...i doubt that you'll be able to catch a ride on a BA767

The QF Skybed is the better seat by a long way when compared to BA,CX, and SQ.

But only 10 744s currently have them fitted.

British Airways bed is 1.8 meters or around that, so GF is still the best.

VS is over 2m though  Big grin (and longer then QF)

QF sky beds are hard to find. I have been on lots of 744s on the Kangaroo Route and have NEVER seen them... nor have any of the people I work with who frequent the route. The Sky Bed is supposed to be very nice -- I've only sat in them in airport lounges and at Qantas promotions affairs (great, but not helpful if they are not on the plane) where they were showcasing them.

As of this Tuesday, QF had them on only 8 747-400s. You want to call Qantas and ask whether the aircraft is the "50 seat" version. If they have to give you the tail number, they take forever... and think you are asking a strange question. However, Qantas reservations are very nice and eager to help you, so they will look it up for you. The tail numbers with SkyBeds are VH-OJL, OJM, OJN, OJO, OJQ, OJR, OJS and OJT.

BA is a sure thing, and I like their beds a lot. But, I am only 6'3", so not sure how you'd fit. At your height, many of the First pods will be tight too. I find the BA Business to be as long as the First. May not be, I don't bring a measuring tape, but Club World is very nice.

I have heard the complaints about CX being like sleeping on a ski slope, but I thought thry were fixing that. I have only flom them in F and the conventional J (not lie-flat). Great service!

I like all three carriers. Good luck!

Of all the three beds QF is the longest at 1.98 metres which is infact 6ft6in.

CX as has been mentioned has the steepest incline whilst some BA beds face the reverse (however that hasn't perturbed BA with them being voted best Long Haul Business class).

I have flown CX business Class SYD-HKG-LAX and found them impeccable I am only 5FT11IN so it didn't worry me.

I have flown on the QF skybed but only on a 1 hour industry induction flight. and found it much better than the actual CX bed (more features - see link blow)

http://www.qantas.com.au/info/flying/travelClasses/internationalBusiness#jump3

However you may find service wise CX a bit better. To date I haven't flown BA business class, so I can't comment.

CX has adjusted the incline on all New Business Class beds from 13 degrees to 9. From memory I think the SQ bed clocks in at 8 degrees, Qantas at 7.7 (which for all intents & purposes might as well be 8).

At the moment the aircraft with skybeds or currently having them installed are:

OJL
OJM
OJN
OJO
OJP
OJQ
OJR
OJS
OJT
OEF

QF are fitting 2 a month with the skybeds plus all the other upgraded features such as:

* J Bar with self service food/drinks for first/biz class passengers.
* New first class seat cushions and upgraded pod linings/interiors.
* Upgraded toilet fixtures and new fixtures in first class toilets.
* New curtains/carpets/wall and roof panels in first/biz class.
* Enhanced lighting system in first/biz class (mood lighting)

So as you can see there is more to it than just fitting new seats.

Hope This Helps.
