Friends From Spain; What Happened With Aviaco?

Wed Apr 14, 2004 3:50 pm

A few years ago, before the magazine Avion Review went international, I was keeping good track of Aviaco. All of a sudden it disappeared and didn't hear anything about it...

According to many, it was the "Jewel of the Crown" (referring to its good financial situation as part of the Iberia Group).

It is quiet obvious it is not still around, as the most recent picture in the site dates of -I think- 1998. What happened to it? Was it a good decision to integrate it into IB? (as I supposed it happened).

Fly727:

Aviaco was integrated into IB as you were thinking. No idea about the exact date but I think it was in 1998-1999. Every MD-88 in IB´s fleet are ex-Aviaco.

All of the routes became IB routes albeit operated by the likes of Air Nostrum, and Binter etc. I remember during holidays in Ibiza watching old Aviaco DC-9s's flying over the bay all day long and that was in 98 so not long after that they must have been wholly integrated into Iberia.

September 1, 1998.

After that, they were still flying in AO colours under "IB 1234 operated by Aviaco" codes, but they were already fully integrated, operationally and financially.

Whenever I was flying domestically in SPain during that time and a plane of IB proper showed up at the gate, a collective sigh of relief went through the waiting pax: "Aaah, es de Iberia!" No kidding.

Thanks for the info guys....

What a slight change can do in the meaning of a sentence; check this out:

...a collective sigh of relief went through the waiting pax: "Aaah, es de Iberia!"

...a collective sigh went through the waiting pax: "Aargh!, es de Iberia!"

The merger was in 2000. Aviaco, was 99'98% of IB and they did the secondary routes within Spain like MD), Spain">MAD-OVD, MD), Spain">MAD-LEI etc... and between MD), Spain">MAD
and smaller airports in Canary Islands like SPC (isla de La Palma, now with IB's 320) VLL-ORY (Valladolid-París) was the main international service.AO fleet was DC-9 and MD-88 (nowadays with IB)

The truth is, I flew Aviaco many times (LGW-OVD, MD), Spain">MAD-OVD,OVD-BCN,SDR-BCN) after they took IB's place in the OVD routes, and I must say they were quite good, specially after they began receiving their MD-88's (though I must admit that they had one of the ugliest liveries around).

I wouldn't mind flying them again.
