Frankfurt Terrace Will Be Closed

Wed Apr 14, 2004 4:29 pm

The Observaction Deck at FRA Apt Terminal 1 will be closed by 31aug04
due new construction of addictional LH lounges & facilities at the B-pier and C-pier (already closed for many years).

What I have heard it will not be reopend again. Maybe the deck in Terminal 2
will be reopend but not sure.

Sad end of a great deck.

Cheers

I don't think there will be no alternative on offer as soon as the deck closes.

The visitors deck on T1 was one of Germany's most popular and most frequented sights (no kidding, I have read this somewhere) and also a great publicity tool and limited revenue source for Fraport.

Closing?
Wow, thats bad news! It was one of the world's best viewing areas and I have great memories from there. First time I went there was in 1988 and it was a real eye opener, man that's really bad news!
I did'nt know the T2 deck was closed, I guess thats why there are'nt many pics from that location.
So there wont be any more viewing areas in FRA Main?
I dont know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone

I don't get it, why close the viewing area? It's not like there's a legitimate security concern to justify it...

I really hope, once again, I REALLY hope that FRA will not go the same way as LHR.

That would be a real shame...

It's the best viewing deck I know, and I will do everything to get there for the very last time before it closes.

Well sadly thats the way things are these days, I live in Melbourne and didn't even know our viewing deck has been closed for months until someone mentioned it on a.net, and said it was closed indefinitely for security reasons.

But to see FRA's deck close will be very sad, I have great memories running around on it as a 7 year old...  Sad

I read this part, but don't understand it. Are these being built where the observation area currently is?

Otherwise i dont know why there's a need to close it. Fritzi, no need to be so blunt.

This came up on another board a month or so ago and the concensus was that the T2 deck will be reopened during the closure of the T1 facility which will reopen once work has been completed, although AA were a bit concerned as they use T2.

Actually, the observation deck is built around (and partially on top of) one of Lufthansa's lounges (I think it's a Senator Lounge, but I'm not sure), so the building and/or expansion there will - obviously - at least change the observation deck.

I certainly hope that this will only be a temporary measure - I'll be moving to Frankfurt next month, and I'd be annoyed if I only had June to August to actually visit the deck...

Seeing the fact that FRA is, like other airports, desperately trying to get more people to adopt a positive attitude towards it (and towards its planned expansion), I really see this as a very bad move: they'll only manage to anger those that, so far, have a positive attitude towards the airport...

Let's keep our fingers crossed that this is a temporary measure...

sorry to correct you but AA operates out of Terminal 1 in FRA.

MXP

To take photos there will not be many places left at FRA.
Actually you still can take photos at the Rwy 18 (take off shots) and landing if rwy 07 is in operacion.
With 25 rwy in operacion you can shoot in the morning landing shots next to the Berlin Memorial (C-47 & C-54) but that´s about it.

To be honest, I am not a big fan of FRA's observation deck on Terminal 1.

I prefer the approach spot at the A(utobahn) 5:

and the spot on runway 18:

because there is more action.

However the situation will become worse when you have no car there, it is almost impossible to reach the spot on runway 18 without a car, you have to walk at least for one hour (oneway). I can also not imagine to spend a whole day on the Autobahn spot only, you can reach it without a car in 25 minutes but it is not possible to buy drinks and food there and there are no toilettes.

It would be no problem for me when they close the T1 terrace but reopen the T2 terrace again, there is a large varity of different carriers instead of only LH and sometimes a TG or a SK plane in between on T1.

Patrick

By the way: Rumor has it that LH is building a new terminal at FRA, exclusive for First Class passengers and frequent flyers with Senator status. Do they really build a completly new terminal or do they only expand their current lounge facilities (on the current observation deck on T1)?

It's no rumour. This new terminal for F class pax will be build between T1 and the LH office buildings. Right now there is a parking lot for LH crews.
What I heard is that they will bring the pax by car to the gates (not 100 % sure about this info).

Correction: You can reach the spotter point at A5 quite easily by train (S-Bahn) plus a few minutes walking!! Of course by car is much more comfortable since you have quite some parking space there across the bridge at the US facilities!

What's the best way to reach the RWY18 spot without having to walk for more then an hour?

I have been there once and enjoyed it, but for reg spotters, the terrace is much better...

Frederic,

Maybe taking a cab is not too expensive - after all, it is only a few kilometers and maybe a ten minute drive from T1.

FraT, thanks for the information!

Andreas, you can go to the A5 spot by S-Bahn? I didn't know that, until now I always walked the whole way from T2 but it was no problem, you are there in 25-30 minutes.

Frederic, it is quite difficult to reach the rwy 18 spot without a car, as far as I know is there no bus connection between the terminals and the spot, maybe some FRA insiders can enlighten us.

AS said above, the S-Bahn station is Zeppelinheim. I think there is also a bus from the airport. Check out RMV.de for local transport connex.
It really makes things easier at FRA airport when you have a car as both locations at the runways are brilliant to reach by car with parking space right there.

Ok, the S7 to Zeppelinheim is perfect - and here's a link to the plan of the surroundings of the station:

http://www.rmv.de/rmv/FILELOAD?Filename=jp03_407D4BD53.pdf

If you follow the Kirchschneise and turn left into Feldschneise, you'll end up directly at the A5 (although not on the side of the airport - is that the place where there's the pedestrians bridge across the A5?), or if you turn into Hurenschneise you'll get to the road that crosses the A5.

Thanks for the help - now I know how to get there as soon as I've moved to FRA... Big grin

Is it me being cynical, or could the real reason for the closure be pressure from this side of the Atlantic, due to Rhein Main being across the runway?

Could be that Lufthansa knew the terrace was closing and then made plans to build the lounge on there.

As I say it's probably just me being cynical!

Hey Guys!

I didn't want to be believe that the terrace will be closed, so I called and asked myself, but unfortunately it is true!!! Though I was told it will be the 31st of october. The reason has been mentioned earlier (construction works).

They are considering to reopen the T2 terrace, but this can't be confirmed yet. Decisions within FRA can take a while... so nothing's for sure on the T2 matter...

Very sad news in my opinion...

Surely, given the popularity of FRA's deck to both enthusiasts and others, some alternative arrangement can be put in force. A good argument can be made for the proposition that having an observation deck actually helps security; it keeps people in one place, rather than having them eke out places along the perimeter.

If necessary, how about writing to politicians suggesting that Fraport should be instructed not to proceed with whatever works it's planning unless it's in a position to have an alternative facility open from the 1st September 04?

When will you fly, Thesto? Also you have to board plane for Berlin at about 7.30. At this time it still may be dark and so you only see "candles".
If it'sa a weekend, tell me. Maybe I will be at the airport too ... Ok, little early for a trip to the 18 West or the A5 but if interested, contact me.

Kaitak

I got your point but you have to see FRA is a big Apt with very limited space
and it is almost impossible to expand. compare the size and traffic FRA & CDG.

So LH with Star Alliance want´s to build up their own Terminal which is actually T1 due to limited space they have to build up on top of it. As far we don´t know there plans it´s hard to tell what the idea is all about.

But maybe they open up again the terrace in T2, but besides that I don´t any
other new places. Beside this there are only the mentioned approach shots.

At FRA there always contruction going on, don´t forget the planned A-380 MMT hangar on the South side in the near future.

One problem with taking a taxi to the A5 spot:

The only way a cabbie would get you there would be outside the car, dragging you on a rope attached to your feet (or hands, you choose).
He just spent several hours to get to the front of the queue, he won´t settle for less than a ride to, say, Cologne.

At LHR if they're back in the queue within a certain time (20 mins or something) they don't lose their spot.

EDIT: Or so I've heard...

If this closure actually happens, I will be a big loss for both FRA and many general visitors and aviation fans. I, for one, will definitely miss it!

When I was last at FRA (early March), both the terraces were closed, which meant I had to go to McDonald's (I didn't have a car so couldn't go around the perimeter). It was fine, although it was difficult to get some of the registrations.
