Service To RIO (GIG) From TUL On CO?

Fri Apr 16, 2004 12:12 pm

I am going to Rio this summer and am in the process of booking a ticket from Tulsa to Rio on July 4 through August 13. I am a student and am going through STA Travel. The cheapest so far has been on Continental for about $850. I normally only fly American for all my air travel, but this fare on CO is about $300 cheaper. Should I give CO a try? Any ideas on cheap airfare? I know that AA has much more service to South America, and I could possibly fly on a 777 with AA which is always nice, and gain more AAdvantage Miles. I just can't seem to justify not trying Continental, feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Try OKC or ICT instead.

I would say go with CO - who knows, they might surprise you and be better than AA. In any case, CO is a respectible airline, and if CO doesn't surpass AA, the experience will at least be equal.

If you take CO you'll have to change planes in IAH and your flight to GIG it has an intermediate stop in GRU.

You'll get a 767 from Houston down to Rio de Janerio. And from what I keep hearing they are among the nicest of international configured 767s flying these days. Plus in flight service on COs international runs is generally better than average.

I find it is funny that you are having a hard time justifying flying Continental. I would have a hard time justifying spending $300 more just for the privilage of flying American.

I know this feature has been hyped to death and some may say it's overrated, but unless you get a 777 to Brazil on AA, you won't have a PTV to pass the time. CO has it on all their 767s...

CO is certainly a good choice, with above-average service domestically and generally very good service on long-haul flights. Their 767-200s, which usually do the Brazil service, are very comfortable and well equipped with new look interiors and PTVs for everyone. Its a nice ride....enjoy it.

Stock1985 :
I know some travel agencies that are specialized in tickets to Brasil.
They work with AA, CO, RG and TAM ,
I just got a ticket from SAT to GRU in June for $745
I am not sure if I can post their web-sites here.
What you guys think?
Or if you e-mail me I can send you the web addresses.

Personally I think CO is slightly better than AA in economy. Their whole international fleet is quite new and, as someone pointed out, you are guaranteed to get a PTV on CO. Yes, I know PTVs are overhyped on this board, but on a long flight like that, it can really help pass the time!

A lot of us in TUL tend to be very supportive of AA because they have a huge maintenance base here with around 8,000 employees. This means that we have known someone working at AA for years and when we were in school (40+ years ago) some of our friends had parents working for AA. AA has been very good for TUL and we try to reciprocate that support.

In terms of your trip, keep checking the internet as things can change fairly often and you might be able to find a better deal on AA.

Ken777, I agree, that is a perfectly valid reason to choose an airline. I worked for AA briefly myself, and--all other things being equal--I still try to throw some business their way whenever I can. If I were in this situation, the $300 price difference would probably be the deciding factor, but it's certainly true that there are other factors to consider beyond price and PTVs.
