AA And SN Given ‘anti-trust Immunity’ By US DoT

Sat Apr 17, 2004 3:01 am

Deeper commercial cooperation between American Airlines and Belgium's major airline, SN Brussels Airlines will be possible following the granting of Anti-Trust immunity to the alliance between the two airlines by the US Department of Transportation (DoT).

The approval, which was announced in Washington D.C. last night (Thursday 15 April), will permit greater coordination between the two airlines on the marketing, scheduling and selling of their services.

"This is excellent news which will allow American and SN Brussels Airlines to increase cooperation to the benefit of both airlines' customers," said Craig Kreeger, American's Vice President Europe & Pacific. "It comes as we are about to add a second daily transatlantic flight in cooperation with SN Brussels Airlines."

“We are very proud that, only 2 years after the launch of SN Brussels Airlines, we have established a solid and successful relationship with world’s largest airline American Airlines. “ says Executive Chairman Rob Kuijpers of SN Brussels Airlines. “The Anti-Trust immunity will allow us to deepen our commercial cooperation with American. It is excellent news for our customers. We can now offer them even better travel solutions.”

On May 17th, American Airlines will launch a new daily service between Brussels and New York JFK airport. SN Brussels Airlines will be a codeshare partner on this flight as they are on American's existing daily Brussels Chicago O'Hare service. American has operated between the USA and Belgium since May 1989.

American first launched a commercial alliance and codeshare agreement with SN Brussels Airlines in May 2003. This offers customers of American Airlines the opportunity to fly beyond Brussels with SN Brussels Airlines to a growing number of destinations throughout Europe and Africa. Conversely, SN Brussels Airlines customers are able to travel to major metropolitan areas in the United States as well as Canada and the Caribbean via Chicago and New York. Frequent flyers can continue to earn mileage credit and redeem award travel under American's AAdvantage and SN Brussels' Privilege programme whenever flying on services operated by the other carrier.

American and SN Brussels Airlines filed an application with the US Dept. of Transportation for anti-trust immunity on 13 November 2003. The DoT's ruling affirms such cooperation is in the public interest and favours the consumer.

This looks like good news for both airlines and I hope that SN can maximize the benefits of an expanded US operation. If they eventually join oneworld I'll be able to fly them on RTW trips. Now if the US government can pull their head out on the AA-BA situation . . .
