Cargo Hub On The West Coast

Sat Apr 17, 2004 5:11 am

How come there aren't any all belly Cargo hubs on the West Coast similar to Fedex operations in Memphis?

At UPS we have our major west coast hub in ONT... I'm not sure what you mean.

The UPS West Coast Hub is 48acres with 22 aircraft parking positions. It services:
Wyoming, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Utah, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Hawaii and Nevada, as well as portions of South Dakota and Nebraska.
They can sort 36,000 pkgs per hour with most intl packages going to asia.

actually ONT was just expanded:
The expansion increases the hub's sorting capacity by 53 percent to more than 107,000 packages per hour, or about 30 per second. It expands the size of the facility by more than 35 percent, adding 176,000 square feet. With 676,000 square feet now under one roof, the UPS facility is more than six times the size of the playing surface of Dodger Stadium.

The Fedex westcoast overlay is at OAK.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

FedEx has a regional hub in OAK.

I'm not sure what you mean by all "belly cargo like FedEx in Memphis". Memphis is FedEx's super hub where most FedEx cargo will pass through, lower or main deck loaded. As for pax airlines, a lot of cargo will naturally consolidate through their hubs, but isn't necessary since pax airlines don't have to consolidate cargo to make it economical to transport from A to B.

For example, one of the places I use to order DVDs from used to upgrade my order from USPS to UPS 2nd day air for free. Their warehouse was located in Las Vegas and it would ship the package from Las Vegas-Ontairo-Louisville-Ontario-Honolulu. If I were to ship that package via a pax airline, it could go non-stop Las Vegas-Honolulu, Las Vegas-LA-Honolulu, etc.

The reason why FedEx has a major operation at OAK is the fact they have set up a full Federal Inspection Service (US Customs) facility there. This is why I think we may see a small number of FedEx A380-800F's based there late this decade.  Smile

ConcordeBoy,

You are kidding when you said YVR has substantial cargo ops right?

I would hardly call a UPS daily 752, 2 CargoJet 722s, 2 FedEx 722s, the odd WestEx F-27, 1 or 2 Purolator 722/CV580 and the thrice weekly CX Cargo 744F service "substantial". I think the more convoluted term is "weak".

Your pkg probably would of gone LAS-ONT-HNL. Not LAS-ONT-SDF-ONT-HNL. Why would UPS send it from ONT-SDF then back to ONT? If you are tracking online, just because there is a scan that says Louisville doesn't mean the pkg was actually at SDF. SDF may have a tracking entry for an exception scan, or some sort of internal code.

The way we run 2nd Day up here is the pkg gets aged over night, and sent out the following day. I know in the US for our operations, 2ND Day uses Ground and Air service when available. Since you can't drive to HNL, your pkg was more than likely aged in LAS and sent out the following day just as a normal UPS Express PKG would go.

Rob;

You forgot to add the daily UPS metro-liner (contract) from Victoria. It doesn't get more substantial than that. haha

If you look at the population spread of North America, most of the people live from Toronto east. That's why most of the Asian bound cargo goes over Canada, with a stop at ANC. Most of the west coast cargo hubs are small in relation to Memphis or New York, because they are regional hubs. SEA gets a number of MD-11's and 747's on the cargo ramp, but in relation to JFK or ANC it is small.

It would be nice if UPS would share some of those customs inspectors with us on the north side. When we get an in-bond in, we end up sending back to the hub, or to LAX to clear. A real pain if you ask me.

Does anyone know why UPS sends a one-way trip from eastbound OGG to SAN 4 or 5 days a week? Is it to reposition or does it actually carry anything?

From what I can tell, the routing of the 763 is ONT-HNL-OGG-SAN and then becomes the evening SAN-SDF flight. I was just wondering why it stops at SAN on its way back to SDF and not ONT?

The SDF-SAN flight that arrives in the morning, and would normally be the turn around aircraft that goes back to SDF, drops off its cargo and heads on up to LAX, probably empty.
Uncle SAN at your service!
