Air Manchester

Sat Apr 17, 2004 9:55 pm

According to the book - Faded Glory by John K. Morton, there was a very short lived charter airline based at Manchester called Air Manchester funnily enough. Although it lasted only for the summer season of 1982, its two Bac 1-11's must have been seen by some of the more knowledgable (older) members.

They were operated on behalf of Sureway Holidays, the picture shows one Bac 1-11 in the livery registered G-SURE. If you do not have the book, the livery was white with a broad red cheatline with a thin white line followed by a thin blue line above. the whole cheatline being below the window. The tail was also white with a red 'S' and the cheatline repeated through it.

I wondered if anyone knows where the aircraft originated, where they went and what the other aircraft was registered. The flight number or any other memories.

The book "First and Foremost" has a paragraph about them: 1st visit was on 18th May, 1st service to Ibiza on 3rd June (just 8 passengers!). Ceased operations 1st September, but resumed services and moved base to Liverpool on 18th October and gave up the ghost on 31st October

The other 1-11 was due to be G-BMAN.

They flew under the AOC of British Air Ferries.

G-SURE's heritage: G-AVOE of Autair, sold to Cambrian who merged into BA. Changed reg when it went to Air Manchester in 1982. Summer 1983 saw it go to Dan Air back as G-AVOE. Britt Air (of the US) nabbed it from BAe for 3 years before ending up in Nigeria with Okada Air. Now broken up

G-BMAN: G-AVOF of Autair, sold to Cambrian who merged into BA. G-BMAN was not taken up in 1982. In 1983/1984, it was leased to British Island Airways, British Caledonoian and Dan Air. Britt Air (of the US) nabbed it from BAe for 2 years before ending up in Nigeria with Okada Air. Now withdrawn from use.
