Vietnam Airlines: What Are They Like?

Sun Apr 18, 2004 3:08 pm

Hey All,

Just a quickie

Has anyone flown Vietnam airlines recently? If so, what are they like? (service, food, comfort).

Also I am very picky about the airlines I fly safety wise - what is their record like? (e.g. I wouldnt fly Garuda or Air China based on what I've heard).

any info. would be appreciated! Planning a trip from Sydney this year

Thanks a lot

Sorry Ansett767, haven't flown with them for a long time, I guess they are improving, so is Air China...

Cheers!

Haven't flown them but have seen some of the guys using our sim for training from time to time (ex-pats and locals too).

Perhaps you'd like to check out the following thread where a similar topic was discussed: http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/1391963/6/

Flew them a couple months ago Hong Kong to Hanoi. They were fine - kinda like Philippines or Thai, not like SQ or CX.

Don't know their safety record, although the planes are pretty new.

Kind of old fashioned

But wonderful food, a fusion between the best of French and Asian, great.

But their systems and attitudes are in need of an upgrade. For example each plane arriving in H.C.M.C. is escorted in by a security car, then there is the wait to clear immigration etc.

Here is their safety record (according to airdisaster.com). It seems to be relatively good:

You'll be happy to know that a great deal of the pilots flying for Vietnam Airlines are in fact from Ansett, especially on the 767. So if you felt safe flying on Ansett 767's, then you should feel right at home.

They are also much more leniant with respect to cockpit visits, so perhaps you'll be able to go for a visit during the flight.

Flew with them four times back in Dec/Jan and posted a trip report.

Generally they seem a safe and competent airline. The two A320's and one 76 I flew on were a little faded but the A321 I took from Hue-Hanoi was very nice.

Service is basic (roll in a box) and drinks confined to cold sodas, water and fruit juice (a beer would have been nice). Maybe its better on international flights

All the airports I used in Vietnam, Saigon, Da'nang, Hue and Hanoi were fine, but a little basic in places.

As Captaingomes notes, lots of their crews are either Aussie or SA

Happy landings with VN and I hope you enjoy wonderful Vietnam
