Weekly Standard On The Airline Industry-Thoughts?

Tue Apr 20, 2004 11:31 pm

Don't know how you guys feel about the Weekly Standard's political tilt, but here's an interesting article that could cause a bit of controversy on this board:

Just thought I'd throw it out there ...

government assistance to national carriers is controversial. LCCs that have to compete against legacy carriers that are assisted with government loans - controversial.

By the way, the post 9/11 loans that were offered to airlines... I believe that only F9 has paid their's back, right? Hmmm... makes you think about the business plans at the other carriers that received these loans.

To a limited degree (and I mean limited), the post-9/11 loans can be justified by the fact that the airlines were shut down for 3-4 days by the government. I can clearly see the argument that the government should help reimburse the airlines for these lost revenues, especially in the case of USAirways, which had one if its main airports (DCA) shut down for months after 9/11. But you do bring up a good point, AirlineFanatic.
