First Arline In The US

Wed Apr 21, 2004 5:31 am

Ok...my teacher in American history said that the first Airline in the US was American Airlines...I interjected "NO, it's PANAM!"...

So, I'd like to put you sluths to work:
What was the REAL first airline in America and who founded it?
I NEED PROOF FROM AN INTERNET SITE!!!
Thanks!
NEXT FLIGHT: FLL-ATL-HPN on FL

Many say that the Tampa/St.Pete flying boat service, run by Tony Jannus, is the first:

What about Chalk's Int'l? Didn't they start in 1918?

Wasn't Western the first airline to exist in the US? I believe it was, if not Western, TWA. Western was founded in 1926, Pan Am was founded in 1927.

First in the world was KLM: 1919.

According to R.E.G. Davies' excellent reference "Airlines of the United States Since 1914" (a must read for any airline enthusiast), the first airline in the United States was the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line, which began service at 10am on 1 January 1914 with A.C. Pheil (former mayor) being piloted across the bay by Tony Jannus in a Benoist Type XIV flying boat.
