Anybody Flew To/through Prague Here?

Wed Apr 21, 2004 7:20 am

Hi people,

I would like to get your opinion about Prague Airport. Which airlined did you take to fly there, did you connect to another city, how do you like the airport in general. They are upgrading the terminal now.

In my opinion PRG will be new Central Europe's Hub.

I have flown to/from PRG on Tyrolean Airways to/from VIE, also on Czech Airlines and Lufthansa to/from FRA, and on British Airways to/from LHR.

How about you?

I have flown to Ruzyne Intl. Airport on 2 different occasions. Once by myself, and once with my mother.

I only remember the trip which I took by myself as it was only 4 years ago.

I flew in on CSA Czech Airlines from YYZ on the Airbus A310-300. This was my first time flying alone and I was extremely nervous about flying alone and arriving at my destination.

Upon deplaning the aircraft, I was able to pass customs collect my luggage and meet my family, all within 25 minutes.

Overall I thought it was a very user friendly airport, as well as a very visually appealing facility. I was pleased.

Check-in was just as great although one thing I wasn't a big fan of was security screening right at the gate.

I flew in/out of Prague on Lufthansa a couple of years ago. I thought that it was a very comfortable terminal and much more modern than I'd expected. Secretly, in the back of my mind, I was hoping for something exotic out of the 40's, with "P R A H A" written in big, block letters across a sleek, concrete terminus. Of course, this was ridiculous considering what an important tourist destination Prague has become.

I do hope that Prague becomes a gateway to Central Europe. I think that the airport has the space, connections, and traffic to warrant expansion.
This is the time. And this is the record of the time.

Huh, that was back in February 1990, only three months after the revolution - the fall of the wall.

I remember that there was only two baggage belts in a livingroom sized room which was totally stuffed because two planes had arrived the same hour, one Il-62 from Copenhagen with 50 pax (including me) and a Tu-134 from Leningrad with some 10 pax. (Yep, still no St. Petersburg).

Anyway my baggage managed to arrive on the Leningrad belt!!!

The terminal building looked very tired - as if nothing had been painted for 40 years. And it was cold inside, probably slightly above freezing, they probably did no heating at all.

I would assume that things are entirely different today.

They have started with building new Terminal in PRG. It will be called Terminal C North and it will expand the capacity to about 15 mil. pax a year. When you will be there in July it will not be completed. It will open sometimes in 2005.

Also between 2007-2010 they plan to build 3rd runway in PRG to keep with the demand.

I flew OK into PRG on the A310-300 from JFK two years ago and found the airport to be very user-friendly. I stayed in the country for several weeks before flight OK from PRG to BRU on a 737, then returning to New York via PRG a week later. All in all I think the amount of traffic then at PRG and the increases expected as the Czech Republic joins the EU warrant expansion and I'm happy to hear that they are in the process of renovating the terminals and expanding upon them.

Flew to PRG last June ... as destination on AF. Very quick baggage claim and customs. Leaving a few days later on OK to BUD ... quick check-in, security. The city transit operates a convenient bus from one of the Metro stations - lot cheaper than a shuttle.

On the return to the US, I flew on OK from BUD to PRG and had 50 minutes scheduled transit time to the JFK flight, which turned out to be more than enough.

I few on OK from MUNICH on non - rev just got on. when I left PRG to go too Frankfurt also on non rev I thought I was on LH but ended up on OK . it was a nightmare . flights oversold and they left me waiting until almost depature time. so after they said ok too go I had too run with my suitcase through the secrity check point , push my way through customs/immigration then run too the furthest gate (naturally), so if your non reving GOOD LUCK.

I flew several times through PRG on FRA-PRG-OTP (Bucharest Otopeni) and OTP-PRG-FRA with OK . Flights on FRA-PRG-FRA were with LH. Airport is O.K., very clean and it is easy to find the gate you're looking for. Walking distances are not long and you have almost always a very good sight on the planes. Baggage arrived in time on all flights. The only drawback in you fly OK is that you have to obtain a boarding card for the second segment at the transfers desk. You may have to wait in line there, so take yourself some time for changing planes.

1993 as a non-rev on a DL 727 from FRA. Pilots were CVG based, the FAs were WAW based. We were the only a/c at the airport on arrival and taxied behind a car with a "follow me" sign on the roof to the farther possible parking stand. Then all the bags were unloaded onto a flat trailer pulled by a farm tractor and the passengers took an old bus. Terminal was minimal from what I recall, and the woman at the info desk set me up with a room for USD 15 a night in the city center. I'm sure things have changed drastically since then...

I flew out or PRG in April 1999 on a Swissair flight to ZRH. I found the airport to be quite user friendly. I can't say I recall everything as it was too early in the morning and I had the flu.

I flew LHR-PRG-LHR with OK two or three years ago and have to say I was very pleasantly surprised by the airport. Clean, modern and efficient with short queues for check-in and dirt-cheap duty-free! As I recall, we didn't wait very long at all for our baggage. The only problem we did have was that a snow storm on the day we were meant to travel meant the airport had to close, so ended up arriving 24 hours later than expected. Based on the amount of snow on the ground, I was surprised that an airport serving a city that has "proper" winters had to close for what only seemed to be 3 to 4 inches of snow.

Overall though, great airport.

I have flown on Czech Airlines 3 times and went via PRG all the times while going to Croatia. PRG is a nice medium size airport, pretty busy too.
I have flown with Czech Airlines A310-300, B737-500, and Tupolev 154
and with Croatia Airlines ATR-42-300.

I flew into PRG in Oct. 2001 and experienced the hardest landing ever aboard a BA 757 (G-BMRJ) there. We were escorted to our gate from the runway by a Skoda...I guess that must be standard procedure. I was very impressed by how clean, modern and easy to use, Ruzyne Airport was. I flew back to LHR on another BA 757 (G-BMRH)'s interesting to see that CSA handles the check-in process for BA there.

Ive been in and out of PRG countless times...most of my experiences were excellent...until the most recent one (this January). 4 inches of snow closed the whole airport down for 5 hours, my fligh was cancelled, and I had to wait in line for 7 hours at the CSA desk to be re-routed...and didn't get out until 2 days later...when another 4 inches of snow closed the airport once again, and I dind't get out until about 3 hours late. It was a nightmare...fortunately i have family in Prague, so i had a place to stay...many people were stuck in the airport for days...over a measly 4 inches of snow. Its a great airport in the summer, but the people behind the scenes do a crappy job at dealing with even the most mild of winter weather.
