First Choice Airways Goes Long Haul From EMA

Wed Apr 21, 2004 9:28 pm

As already rumoured, First Choice Airways will be introducing 3 new long haul routes from Nottingham East Midlands Airport from summer 2005 as part of their expanding long haul operation. The new routes will be to Florida, The Dominican Republic and Cancun.

All these routes will be operated by FCA's enhanced 767-300's which will have seat back tv's and larger seats throughout the new '777 style' cabin.

Great news for EMA and hopefully we could start attracting more in the future.

Do people think that the sucess of the Amritsar flight has anything to do wth this?????

Which airports for the summer this and next will have routes to the 3 destinations as mentioned. SFB, CUN and POP?

Good to see the PTV's coming aboard First Choice Airways 767. Unfortunately though I guess they will still have a 29" seat pitch?

Ted, the answer to your question is that no-one really knows for sure. First Choice have already stated they will be revamping the Premium cabin, and have also mentioned "more space for everyone". Some people have heard they will have more leg-room than BA and bmi, but until the aircraft are delivered who knows??

Does anyone know if any charter airline will expand it's longhaul routes from CWL?

At the moment we only have:
MYT operating - 763 - SFB x 1 weekly in summer
Air Transat operating - A310/A330 - YYZ x 1 weekly summer
BY operating 763 - Bahamas - 1x weekly in winter

I think a service to CUN would be a good idea, any one got any info/ideas?

Regards,

CM

I might book one of these myself for next Summer, having just last week suffered at the hands of Delta 767-300s across the Atlantic for a week's holiday in Miami... I was longing for the AMM 763 we took to PVR and back in 2002!!

If the new planes have bigger seats (2-3-2?), PTVs and especially more legroom then a trip to the Dominican Republic would be great, since that is where my partner and I first met and neither of us have the luxury of going there regularly with "work" anymore.

Will watch with interest, I hope of course seat-only bookings will be available as we like to do our own thing once we get there.

Remember EMA-SFB has been tried before but only lasted 1 or 2 seasons...
But good news for EMA anyway

Yes, some very good news for you. Travel City Direct will be operating 747's into SFB from CWL this summer. This is definitely happening and will post more details soon regarding dates & times.

First Choice Airways' long-haul B767s for 2005 will be completely different from the current fleet...

• New B777 style cabin
• Minimum 33" pitch in economy, 36" pitch in premium
• Economy seats around 2" wider than the competition by reducing to 2-3-2 abreast
• Advanced PTVs with a minimum of 20 channels in economy, 30 channels in premium

And there are still a couple more new destinations that have been announced to the travel industry which haven't filtered down yet...

Crosswind,

Sounds great, I assume seat-only bookings will be available via air2000.com for these routes?

Also, apart from the additional channels in Premium, what will be the other benefits (since the seat pitch difference alone is not huge). Will it be a 2-2-2 layout if economy is 2-3-2?

It will be interesting to see if FCA can make a success of this arrangement, as other UK charter carriers will surely follow suit to compete in the longer term?

Crosswind,

Are these new destinations going to include flights from EMA or will they be just from MAN and LGW?

Its good news and regarding the flights to SFB by Air2000 5 years ago Gkirk, it was due to the stop in Belfast, people wernt overly happy about that and the flight supplements were around the £150 per person while from now there wont be any and thats the reason why it really failed. Also new destinations from MAN required the aircraft that operated the flights from EMA to be re-distributed.

Will FCA still operate flights to these destinations from BHX too?

With BHX only being 35 miles down the road I was surprised by this news!

Does anyone know if long hauls will come back to LTN??? I few seasons ago MON operated a weekly A330 service to SFB.

Would love to see that back!!! (Well we can live in hope!)

We're looking at going to Cuba next year and FCA from EMA would be great but I doubt my dad would go on a 767 because the pitch is not good enough for a 11hr flight.

I'm told that the EMA flights are "stolen" from BHX!

TCX and FCA arent operating any longhaul from BHX this year, although they did last year. Just leaves BHX with MON MYT and BY on longhaul.

FCA or AMM then got rid of two 763s last year. G-OOAM and another went, whilst G-OOAL (i've flown on her Smile) and G-OOAN remained.

I flew G-OOAL on a 1hr 30 min flight to Salzburg. I found that the A321 with FCA was MUCH comfier, with leather seats and more legroom. The 763 seats were VERY cramped and cloth, but still FCA are the best Charter in my opinion

Cheers

What, with 33" pitch in economy? You won't find that in cattle class on any other UK charter airline, except perhaps TCX on their dedicated 757s for Canadian Affair.

I'm am going to Cuba this summer and we're going on Monarch from MAN on an A330. With, I believe, 29" pitch and no PTVs. Ouch.

Sam - or anybody else who might know:

What was the fourth 767 in the FCA fleet? As far as I knew there were only G-OOAL, -AM, and -AN. And does that mean they're doing all their long-haul business this summer with only -AL and -AN? Or are they getting something in on lease?

Cheers
Ben

FlytoEGCC,

First Choice are to take delivery of 3 more 767-300ER's, ex Vietnam Airlines, from Summer 2005 which will have a the modified cabin as mentioned previously.

I'm not sure what is going to happen to the existing 767's, G-OOAN and G-OOAL. Will they be fitted with the modified cabin, will they even remain in the FCA fleet? I'm sure we'll find out soon.

(Edit just to add that the 'fourth' 767 in AMM's fleet was G-OOAO, ex UK Leisure)

Cheers, Mark, that explains it. I thought UKL only had one 767 when they were integrated into AMM.

Once again, a question open to anyone who might know: will the EMA-based aircraft be one of the ex-Vietnams? Or will they go elsewhere, and the EMA aircraft will be transferred from a current base such as MAN/LGW? Would be useful to know in case we fly with them from EMA next year!

Cheers

Would extra fuel tanks be an option for First Choice on its planes. Then they could fly longer routes with the current planes and not have to introuduce another type to their fleet?

777ER
I'm not sure, but I doubt it. UK charters tend operate very full (particularly the long-hauls), so I doubt they'd be able to carry a lot of extra fuel because it would take them over MTOW. Possibly they could on the 767s with revamped interiors because fewer seats and fewer passengers = lower weight, but does the 767-300ER provide for this without expensive modification? I thought the ER designation meant that it already had long-range tanks fitted. Also, I don't believe First Choice needs any longer-range aircraft than it already has, unless it is opening up some new routes to further afield than it flies already.

Think the long haul flights will be operated by LGW or MAN based a.c
Also heard they may be operated on a fortnightly basis, with flights on other weeks operating from Robin Hood

Bhxforever,

TCX are in fact operating longhaul from BHX this summer to a number of Canadian destinations, on behalf of Canadian Affairs....

Hats off to FCA for taking the chance and putting a product out there that employees can be truly PROUD to deliver. Hope they pull it off, it can only force us competitors to follow suit. Just a shame we aren't doing it first. hehe.

Well Sanford is appearing as weekly for sure:

Departs EMA 1100 Thursday
Arrives SFB 1520

Departs SFB 1650
Arrive EMA 0600 Friday

Can't find the schedules for Cancun and Dominican Republic, maybe these will be the fortnightly ones if any.
