Best Small Airport-5 Or Less Regional Carriers

Thu Apr 22, 2004 4:57 am

I'm not sure if this has been a previous thread so i'll start it anyway. What do you think the best "small airport" is? An airport with say 5 or less mainline or regional carriers.

I would have to say that mine is CHA. Maybe that's a hometown biased opinion but oh well. Commercial carriers include:

1. ASA-service to ATL (ATR 72's and CRJ's).
2. Comair-service to CVG (CRJ's).
3. Northwest Airlink-service to MEM (Saab 340's or CRJ's).
4. American Eagle-service to ORD (ERJ's).
5. US Airways/Express-service to CLT (Dash-8's) and LGA (ERJ's/CRJ's), also soon-to-be service to DCA (ERJ's/CRJ's).

This is mine...Let's see what your's is.

Some smaller airports I've visited in the last few months that are nice, are
Corpus Christi, TX, and Midland Intl MAF

Both are fairly new, or completly rebuilt, and spacious and clean.
Both Use 4 active gates (but have room for like 6 plus expansion)
Both see Southwest, Continental, and American- and I think Delta and or United at one of the other.

I even flew into Mid America-Stlouis in November on Great Plains, before it went up, and that was a clean spacious small airport (though no real shops or food).

lol.. I don't know about the BEST regional airport, but it's definitely NOT:

IDA (Idaho Falls) or AVP (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre)

LOL.. I hate those 2 airports!  Wink/being sarcastic

Brunswick/Golden Isles Airport at Glynnco Jetport is quite nice... served by ASA about four times a day from Atlanta with CRJs.

Is GSP too big to be considered? Lessee....... NW and Airlink, DL with Connection carriers, CO Express, US Airways Express, AA Eagle, United Express.... Great terminal, the most BEAUTIFUL airport grounds I have ever seen. HUGHE mature trees right up to the terminal building, lots of grass & shrubs, and a big fountain i the middle of the roadways....
Finally made it to an airline mecca!

Northwest Regional Airport, Roanoke, Texas. Not a single Regional Carrier (<5) 3,500 X 40 ft. Hill at one end, trees at the other. Biggest plane would be a Cessna 406.

Awesome airport. They say if you can fly into it, you can fly into any airport. Real tough when you are learning to fly, though. Awesome thrill once you've tamed it.

I'd rather be flying (real original)

I don't know if SAV qualifies for this criteria or not, but it's a great airport.

What about Portsmith NH. One gate which empties into the baggage claim which connects to the car rental desks. Can't beat that quick exit.

I think that ISP will be a great airport once the new Southwest terminal opens up and they finally put in some decent resturants.

ROA - Roanoke, Va. - Woodrum Field.

Great airport, really cool passenger terminal building. The city made it resemble a updated version of a "warehouse district" building. FAA just completed a new tower. Plenty of GA room, too.

Its served by:

US Express (used to be mainline)
UA Express
NW Link
DL Connex

Go Roanoke!

Charlottetown (YYG) in Prince Edward Island.

It is served by:

Air Canada (includes Air Canada Jazz)
Prince Edward Air
Jetsgo

or Sydney (YQY) in Nova Scotia is served by:

Air Canada (includes Air Canada Jazz)
Jetsgo
Provincial Airlines
Air St. Pierre

I guess that's all

GUC:

Seasonal AA 1 daily 757 (winter) From DFW.
6? daily UAX (Skywest) Dash-8 from DEN.

That's pretty much it.

And all at once the crowd begins to sing: Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same

For me, I would say the best small airport is KSBP in California's Central Coast. Recently upgraded terminal, nice restaurant with runway view (The Spirit of San Luis), nice view of the valley and the coast when you take off etc etc. They have America West 1 daily to Phoenix I believe (CRJ-200?), United/Skywest back and forth about 7 or more times a day each to LAX and SFO (EMB-120), and of course, American Eagle flying Saab's to LAX and one daily to SJC (EMB-145).

TOL:
(In order of their ticket counter placement starting at the left)
1. US Airways Express (Saabs)
2. Delta Connection (CRJs & FRJs)
3. Northwest Airlink (Saabs)
4. ATA Connection (Saabs)
5. American Eagle (ERJs)

I am going to leave out TMA(Transmeridian Airlines) just because they are a charter airline.

Yeah the planes are small...but there is always room to grow.

I'll lobby my vote for BTR over Great Falls, Montana. Here at BTR we get CO Express/Mainline to IAH, NW Airlink to MEM, Delta Connection/Mainline to ATL CVG DFW, American Eagle to DFW, and I think US Airways Express to CLT. Sometimes BTR will get a 737 to IAH from CO, or a MD 80 series or 737 to ATL. I think the service is right in line with the airport size. Although if the fares were cheaper more people would use BTR instead of MSY, and maybe generate more demand. I would love to see HP PHX-BTR, although Mesa would probably operate it. Great Falls, Montana is also a nice airport, very cozy and quaint but a tad too 70's. I think NW, DL, AS/Horizon, and Big Sky have service.

Knoxville TN (TYS) is probably the nicest regional airport in the lower 48. THe terminal is beautiful with a waterfall right in the middle and several restaurants line the halls of stone made to look like the rugged mountanous landscape of the region. Service to Atlanta by ASA/DELTA service to Houston/Cleveland/New York/Newark by Continental Express as well as DTW,MEM by NWAirlink and PSA has several destinations along with another jet provider for the USAirways network to various East Coast destinations. Eagle is there as well as United Express I believe.

Eug is very nice and so is RDM. I thought IDA (Idaho Falls) was pretty nice-they use a jetway for a Dash8!
